Pillow box blank
Abstract
A one-piece blank is provided which may be composed of
paperboard, or other suitable material, and which is used to form a
pillow-pack type of carton. The carton has a generally ellipsoidal
shape with reinforced end walls, and it has a pair of cover flaps
which extend over the elliptical edges of the end walls and which
are glued together along one side edge of the carbon. The carton is
shaped to have two spaced and parallel upright rectangular support
pedestals at one end so that it may be placed in a self-standing
position on a horizontal surface. Also, a hole may be provided in
the rear wall of the carton at the other end, so that it may be
hung from a wall or bracket. The product contained in the carton is
exposed through a window formed in one of the cover flaps of the
carton, the window having side flaps which serve to hold the
product firmly within the carton to prevent it from rattling around
in the carton.

Claims
What is claimed:
1. A one-piece blank for forming an ellipsoidal-shaped pillow-pack
carton having a first panel and a second panel, each panel having
arcuately-shaped ends, said panels being separated by a scoreline
extending from one of their ends to the other, one of the panels
having arcuately-shaped scorelines at the first and second ends
thereof each forming an ellipse with the corresponding
arcuately-shaped end, and the other of the panels having an
arcuately-shaped scoreline at the first end thereof forming an
ellipse with the corresponding arcuately-shaped end, and each of
the panels having transversely spaced slits therein at the first
end thereof interrupting and extending outwardly from the
corresponding arcuately-shaped scoreline into the corresponding
ellipse and interconnected therein to define spaced and parallel
support pedestals for the carton when the arcuately-shaped ends are
folded about the corresponding scorelines.
2. The one-piece blank defined in claim 1, in which one of the
panels has slits and scorelines therein defining a pair of flaps
which may be turned inwardly to support a product in the carton and
to reveal an aperture in the panel through which the product may be
exposed.
3. The one-piece blank defined in claim 1, in which the
arcuately-shaped end at the second end of the other of said panels
has a hole therein for hanging the carton.
4. The one-piece blank defined in claim 1, in which the other of
the panels has a scoreline adjacent the outer edge thereof and
extending from one end to the other to define a flap to be folded
inwardly and glued to the outer edge of the first panel.
5. A one-piece blank for forming an ellipsoidal-shaped pillow-pack
carton having a first panel and a second panel separated from one
another by a scoreline extending from one end thereof to the other,
said panels each having an arcuately-shaped scoreline at one end
thereof defining elliptically-shaped end flaps for the carton, and
each of the panels having transversely spaced slits at said one end
thereof interrupting the scorelines and extending into the end
flaps and interconnected therein to define support pedestals for
the carton when the end flaps are folded about the corresponding
scorelines.
Description
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
It is usual in the fabrication of paperboard cartons of the
pillow-pack type to provide a pair of cover flaps which are glued
together along one edge and which define a carton having a
generally elliptical cross-section, and to form end flaps which
fold into the elliptical ends of the carton, and which may be
opened to provide access into the interior of the carton. The
pillow box blank of the present invention is appropriately shaped,
slit and cut so that it may be formed into such a
configuration.
In addition, however, the blank of the invention provides pedestals
at one end of the carton so that the carton may be placed upright
on one end on a supporting surface in a self-standing position.
Moreover, a window is formed in one of the cover flaps, as
mentioned above, so that the product contained in the carton may be
displayed, the window having side flaps which serves to hold the
product firmly in the carton.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
FIG. 1 is a plan view of a blank which is shaped, slit and scored
so that it can be folded into a pillow-type of carton, in
accordance with one embodiment of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a perspective representation of a pillow-pack carton
formed from the blank of FIG. 1, and in a partially assembled
condition;
FIG. 3 is a perspective representation of the pillow-pack carton
formed from the blank of FIG. 1, and in its finished state; and
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the carton of FIG. 3 with a product
contained therein and revealed through a window formed in one cover
flap of the carton.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE ILLUSTRATED EMBODIMENT
As shown in FIG. 1, a one-piece blank is provided for forming an
ellipsoidal-shaped pillow-pack carton. The blank has a first panel
10 and a second panel 12, each having arcuately-shaped ends, the
panels being separated by a fold scoreline 14 which extends from
one end of the panels 10, 12 to the other.
The panel 10 has arcuately-shaped scorelines 16 and 18 at each end
thereof, and these scorelines each form an ellipse with the
corresponding arcuately-shaped ends of the panel. The scorelines 16
and 18 form elliptical end panels 20 and 22.
The panel 12 has an arcuately-shaped scoreline 24 at its left-hand
end which forms an ellipse with the corresponding end of the panel
12. The scoreline 24 and the left-hand end of the panel 12 form an
elliptical-shaped end panel 26.
The panel 10 has slits therein adjacent the arcuate scoreline 16
which form a first rectangular-shaped pedestal for the carton; and
the panel 12 has slits therein adjacent the scoreline 24 which form
a second rectangular-shaped pedestal for the carton, the pedestals
being designated 28 and 30 respectively.
The panel 10 also has a pair of longitudianl scorelines 34 and 36
therein and corresponding slots to form two flaps 38 and 40 which
may be turned to provide a support for the product, and to permit
the product to be revealed through the aperture formed by the
flaps. The end panel 22 may have a hanging hole 42 therein.
The panel 12 has a further scoreline 44 extending adjacent its
outer edge from one end to the other. The scoreline 44 defines a
flap 46 which may be folded inwardly and glued on its reverse side
to the outer edge of the cover flap 10.
Although the flaps 38 and 40 are shown in the panel 10 to form a
window in that panel, the flaps may be formed in the panel 12, to
form a window in the latter panel, if so desired.
As mentioned above, the representation of FIG. 2 shows the carton
in a partially assembled form. FIG. 3 shows the completed carton
without the product, and FIG. 4 shows the completed carton with a
product supported therein and displayed through the opening in the
front of the carton.
The invention provides, therefore, a blank which may be easily and
quickly formed into a self-standing pillow-pack type of carton
which also has the feature of supporting and revealing a product
within the carton.
It will be appreciated that although one embodiment of the
invention has been shown and described, modifications may be made.
It is intended in the claims to cover the modifications which come
within the spirit and scope of the invention.
