DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0014] In accordance with one form of the present invention, there
is provided an adjustable mattress system including a main body
having a top, bottom, and four sides, and having a plurality of
layers of the same or different thicknesses and/or densities; a
topper layer that is positioned either on top of or beneath the
main body; and a removable cover that may encase the main body and
topper according to multiple configurations.
[0015] FIG. 1 is an illustration of an embodiment of an adjustable
mattress system, which includes a main body 20 composed of a
plurality of layers 12, 14, and 16. Each of the plurality of layers
12, 14, and 16 is generally the same length and width, but may be
of different thicknesses and/or densities. Also included is a
topper 18, which is of generally the same length and width as main
body 20, so that it is congruent with main body 20. Topper 18 may
be of a thickness and/or density that is different than or the same
of at least one of layers 12, 14, or 16. Topper 18 is configurable
to be selectively positioned beneath the main body 20 or on top of
the main body 20, depending on the configuration of the adjustable
mattress system. The main body 20 and topper 18 may be detachably
coupled by the use of straps, hook and loop fasteners, zippers,
snaps, an outer cover, or other similar means of attachment.
[0016] For convenience of illustration, a removable mattress cover
22 is omitted from FIG. 1, but is shown in one embodiment in FIG.
6. Cover 22 encases the main body 20 and topper 18 when the
adjustable mattress system is deployed in a configuration. In one
embodiment, the cover 22 fits snugly around the main body 20 and
topper 18 to hold those two pieces together when the adjustable
mattress system is in use.
[0017] Cover 22 may be constructed of a machine washable or similar
fabric and may include a non-slip bottom to partially secure the
adjustable mattress system on a surface. Cover 22 may have a zipper
24 or other similar means of closing the cover around main body 20
and topper 18. The zipper 24 or other means of closure may span the
entire perimeter of cover 22 or only a portion of cover 22. In
addition, the fabric of cover 22 may be wholly or partially
constructed of a stretchable or elastic material in order to ease
the task of inserting the main body 20 and topper 18 into the
cover, and/or the fabric may be partially or wholly constructed of
a durable fabric to provide protection to the main body 20 and
topper 18. The inner surface of the cover 22 may be comprised of a
fire-retardant material or composition. It will be appreciated that
in any of the embodiments disclosed, the adjustable mattress system
may be deployed with or without cover 22 without generally
departing from the benefits and functions of the disclosed
invention.
[0018] In one embodiment of the invention, the thin layer 12,
medium layer 14, and topper 18 may be composed of memory foam,
high-loft foam, and/or other similar materials. Core layer 16 may
be composed of firm, high density foams, a framework of springs,
rubber, air, water, and/or other similar materials. It will be
appreciated that other types of foams or cushioning may be employed
without departing from the goals and benefits of the invention. It
will be further appreciated that a combination of materials of
varying thicknesses and densities may be employed for each of the
described layers.
[0019] According to one embodiment, main body 20 has three layers:
thin layer 16, medium layer 12, and core layer 14. The layers may
be permanently attached to one another by glue, adhesive, or other
similar attachment means to form the main body 20. Core layer 14 is
positioned between thin layer 16 and medium layer 12. Thin layer 16
and medium layer 12 may be composed of a high loft memory foam to
provide a responsive, contouring surface. Core layer 14 may be
composed of a more dense, high-density foam base to provide a
firmer structure in between the thin layer 16 and medium layer 12.
Topper 18 may be composed of a memory foam similar to that of thin
layer 16 or medium layer 12. A fire-retardant coating may surround
main body 20, topper 18, and/or individual layers 12, 14, and 16,
or each individual component may have a dedicated fire retardant
cover.
[0020] According to one embodiment, the layers of main body 20 may
be detachably coupled to one another via hook and loop fasteners,
snaps, straps, or other similar attachment means. A user is able to
detach layers 12, 14, and 16 from one another and rearrange the
layers to form a customizable layering system of main body 20.
[0021] FIG. 2 is an illustration of a first configuration of an
adjustable mattress system. This embodiment is configured to
provide an extra firm surface on which a person may lie. In this
first configuration, the main body 20 is oriented so that the thin
layer 16 is the topmost layer. Thin layer 16 is directly above core
layer 14, which in turn, is directly above medium layer 12. Topper
18 is situated beneath the main body 20, directly beneath medium
layer 12. Cover 22 encases the main body 20 and topper 18, as
configured, to hold the topper 18 and main body 20 together, as
well as providing protection to the main body 20 and topper 18. A
person may thus lie on the adjustable mattress system and be
resting on thin layer 16. Because the thin layer 16 is directly
supported by a firmer core layer 14, the user may experience an
extremely firm surface.
[0022] FIG. 3 is an illustration of a second configuration of an
adjustable mattress system. This embodiment is configured to
provide a firm surface on which a person may lie. The level of
firmness in this configuration is less than that of the first
configuration but is more than that of the third and fourth
configurations. In this second configuration, the topper 18 is the
topmost layer and is positioned on top of the main body 20. The
main body 20 is oriented beneath the topper 18 so that the thin
layer 16 is beneath the topper 18. Thin layer 16, in turn, is
directly above core layer 14, which in turn is directly above the
medium layer 12. Cover 22 encases the topper 18 and main body 20,
as configured, to hold the main body 20 and topper 18 together, as
well as providing protection to the main body 20 and topper 18. A
person may thus lie on top of the adjustable mattress system and be
resting on topper 18. Because the topper 18 and the thin layer 16
are used in combination above the core layer 14, the user will
experience a surface that is less firm than the first embodiment,
but is more firm than the embodiments in the disclosed third and
fourth configurations.
[0023] FIG. 4 is an illustration of a third configuration of an
adjustable mattress system. This embodiment is configured to
provide a medium level of firmness: less firm than the first and
second configurations, but firmer than the fourth configuration. In
this third configuration, the main body 20 is oriented so that the
medium layer 12 is the topmost layer. Medium layer 12 is directly
above core layer 14, which in turn, is directly above thin layer
16. Topper 18 is situated beneath the main body 20, directly
beneath thin layer 16. Cover 22 encases the main body 20 and topper
18, as configured, to hold the topper 18 and main body 20 together,
as well as providing protection to the main body 20 and topper 18.
A person may thus lie on top of the adjustable system and be
resting on medium layer 12. Because the medium layer 12 is
supported by a firmer core layer 14, the user will experience a
surface that is softer than the first and second embodiments but is
firmer that the embodiment disclosed in the fourth configuration.
FIG. 5 is an illustration of a fourth configuration of an
adjustable mattress system. This embodiment is configured to
provide an extra soft level of firmness: less firm than the first,
second, and third configurations disclosed above. In this fourth
configuration, the topper 18 is the topmost layer and is positioned
on top of the main body 20. The main body 20 is oriented beneath
the topper 18 so that the medium layer 12 is beneath the topper 18.
Medium layer 12, in turn, is directly above core layer 14, which in
turn is directly above the thin layer 16. Cover 22 encases the
topper 18 and main body 20, as configured, to hold the main body 20
and topper 18 together, as well as providing protection to the main
body 20 and topper 18. A person may thus lie on top of the
adjustable mattress system and be resting on topper 18. Because the
topper 18 and the medium layer 12 are used in combination above the
core layer 14, the thickest level of memory foam is available to
insulate the user from the firm core layer 14. The user will
experience a surface that is softer than all of the above
embodiments disclosed.
[0024] In an additional embodiment of the invention, the topper 18
is excluded from the configuration, and the main body 20 is used
alone and oriented so that the medium layer 12 is the top layer.
The core layer 14, in turn, is directly beneath the medium layer
12, and the thin layer 16 is directly beneath the core layer 14. A
person may thus lie on top of the adjustable mattress system and be
resting on the medium layer 12.
[0025] In an additional embodiment of the invention, the topper 18
is excluded from the configuration, and the main body 20 is used
alone and oriented so that the thin layer 16 is the top layer. The
core layer 14, in turn, is directly beneath the thin layer 16, and
the medium layer 12 is directly beneath the core layer 14. A person
may thus lie on top of the adjustable mattress system and be
resting on the thin layer 16.
[0026] In an additional embodiment of the invention, the topper 18
may be used alone, excluding the main body 20. A person may thus
lie on top of the topper 18 alone.
[0027] FIG. 6 is an illustration of the adjustable mattress system,
including a removable mattress cover 22. The topper 18 and main
body 20 (composed of layers 12, 14, and 16) are encased inside
cover 22, and for convenience of illustration, topper 18 and main
body 20 are not explicitly shown in FIG. 6. Cover 22 functions to
provide protection to topper 18 and main body 20, as well as hold
topper 18 and main body 20 together.
[0028] In an exemplary embodiment, a topper 18 is composed of 1''
of memory foam, a thin layer 16 is composed of 1'' of memory foam,
a core layer 14 is composed of 6.5'' of a high-density core foam,
and a medium layer 12 is composed of 2.5'' of memory foam. The
adjustable mattress system may have standard length and width
dimensions that are generally classified as twin, full, queen, or
king-sized mattress. It will be appreciated that different
dimensions (including length, width, and thickness) may be employed
without departing from the goals and/or benefits of the present
invention.
[0029] It will be appreciated that in each of the embodiments
disclosed, the adjustable mattress system, or its individual
components, may be used with or without the removable mattress
cover 22 without departing from the goals and/or benefits of the
present invention.
[0030] The dimensions and materials specified herein are preferred,
but not mandatory, and different dimensions or materials may be
used, as desired or necessary for a particular environment.
[0031] Thus, an adjustable mattress system has been described which
comprises a cover encasing a main mattress body and a mattress
topper. The main mattress body is comprised of at least three
layers of different thicknesses, including a thin layer, a medium
layer, and a thick core layer. The thick core layer is located
between the thin layer and the medium layer in the main mattress
body. The mattress topper is of a thickness less than that of the
core layer. A cover encases the main mattress body and the mattress
topper. The main mattress body is flippable so that either side of
the mattress can be used as a sleeping surface, and the mattress
topper can be placed either on top of or below the main mattress
body. The variety of configurations can be adapted to provide a
customized firmness in the sleeping surface.
