Description
CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION
[0001] The present application claims priority to, and the benefit
of, U.S. Provisional Application No. 62/971,150, which was filed on
Feb. 6, 2020 and is incorporated herein by reference in its
entirety.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0002] The present invention relates generally to the field of bed
coverings. More specifically, the present invention relates to an
improved bedsheet system comprising a top sheet and a bottom sheet
sewn together along a bottom edge and part way along the respective
sides, such that the bedsheet system allows the bottom sheet to be
tucked securely underneath the mattress to maximize stability of
the bedsheet. The bedsheet system further comprises a pair of
pillow pockets for receipt of a pillow and one or more side pockets
or pouches designed to hold items such as phones, remote control
devices, or other personal items. The bedsheet system offers much
needed convenience when making a bed, while eliminating the need to
reapply standard bedsheets that have fallen onto the floor.
Accordingly, the present specification makes specific reference
thereto. Nonetheless, it is to be appreciated that aspects of the
present invention are also equally applicable to other like
applications, devices and methods of manufacture.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] By way of background, various bed coverings and items such
as bedsheets, bed skirts, pillows or the like are used to make a
bed. Typically, bedsheets are tucked over the mattress placed on
the bed, and then other items such as pillows are separately placed
over the tucked bedsheets. Pillows often get out of place relative
to the mattress even with the slightest of user movement on the
bed. Therefore, many individuals may have to frequently reset the
placement of the pillows on the bed, and may have to struggle to
keep the pillows in place throughout the night which could
interrupt sleep patterns and lead to lack of proper sleep.
[0004] Many bedsheets and/or bed coverings are manufactured from a
purely aesthetic point of view, such that most of the focus is on
the design and appearance of the bedsheets, which may look
attractive to different individuals. However, the functional aspect
of bedsheets and bed coverings are oftentimes overlooked, and are
rarely considered by the designers or the manufacturers.
[0005] Additionally, individuals may toss and turn throughout the
night while sleeping, thereby causing the bedsheets to come off of
the bed. More specifically, the edges of the bedsheets may not stay
tucked underneath the mattress, thereby leading to the bedsheets
falling off the bed while the user is sleeping on the bed or the
user becoming tangled in an untucked bedsheet. Individuals may also
become uncomfortable while sleeping on a bed without a
bedsheet.
[0006] Furthermore, many individuals like to make up their bed
after waking up in the morning. Making a bed typically involves
properly tucking the bedsheets under the mattress and neatly
arranging the pillows, both of which could be frustrating and
time-consuming particularly if the bedsheets and pillows are in
complete disarray in the morning. People who frequently toss and
turn throughout the night while sleeping may have to constantly
make their bed after waking up. Failure to do so may result in a
bed having wrinkled bedsheets or bedsheets and pillows falling off
the bed or scattered on the floor, which makes the bedroom look
unkept and unappealing.
[0007] Further, while laying or sleeping on a bed, there may be a
number of items which may be required by a user. For example,
phones, remote control devices, and other personal items may be
required by the user before or while sleeping. Accordingly, many
individuals like to keep such items nearby, so that the same are
readily available for use when needed. If the bed has associated
shelves, the user may choose to keep these items on said shelves.
However, if the bed does not have associated shelves or other
storage space, the user may have to keep such items on the bed
itself, which may make it uncomfortable for the user to sleep
peacefully on the bed or result in the objects falling or being
knocked off of the bed in the middle of night and becoming
damaged.
[0008] Therefore, there exists a long felt need in the art for an
improved bedsheet system that allows the bedsheet to remain tucked
properly and neatly throughout the night. There is also a long felt
need in the art for a bedsheet system in which both the functional
aspect and user convenience is considered while designing and
manufacturing the bedsheets. Additionally, there is a long felt
need in the art for a bedsheet system in which the pillows remain
intact with the bedsheet and properly positioned throughout the
night, and that does not interfere with the user's sleep. Moreover,
there is a long felt need in the art for a bedsheet system that
makes it easy and convenient for the user to make his or her bed
after waking up, and that comprises a plurality of convenient
storage spaces for personal and other items that the user may
require throughout the night. Finally, there is a long felt need in
the art for a bedsheet system that is relatively inexpensive to
manufacture and both safe and easy to use.
[0009] The subject matter disclosed and claimed herein, in one
embodiment thereof, comprises an improved bedsheet system that is
capable of being fully secured to a mattress, and that will not
become untucked, despite the frequent tossing and turning of the
user throughout the night. The improved bedsheet system preferably
comprises a top bedsheet, a bottom bedsheet sewn to the top
bedsheet along a bottom edge (i.e., foot end) and part way along
the side edges (i.e., near the foot end), a plurality of pillow
pockets positioned near the head end of the bed for receipt of a
pillow, and one or more side pockets positioned near the pillow
pockets to keep small personal items throughout the night. The
bottom bedsheet is oversized at the corners for farther folding
underneath the mattress, and the top bedsheet is sewn to the bottom
bedsheet near the foot end, which is opposite from the head end,
wherein the top bedsheet is smaller in size than the bottom
bedsheet but large enough to overlie a portion of the bottom
bedsheet.
[0010] In this manner, the novel bedsheet system of the present
invention accomplishes all of the forgoing objectives, and provides
a relatively easy, convenient and effective solution that allows a
user to sleep more restfully throughout the night, and that saves
time each morning when it becomes time to make up the bed. The
bedsheet system of the present invention is also user friendly,
inasmuch as it keeps the bedsheet tucked even when the user tosses
and turns throughout the night, and does not require much manual
labor from the user to make up the bed each morning. Additionally,
the improved bedsheet system features pouches or pockets to allow
the user to keep items such as phones, remote control devices, and
other personal items readily accessible to the user throughout the
night.
SUMMARY
[0011] The following presents a simplified summary in order to
provide a basic understanding of some aspects of the disclosed
innovation. This summary is not an extensive overview, and it is
not intended to identify key/critical elements or to delineate the
scope thereof. Its sole purpose is to present some general concepts
in a simplified form as a prelude to the more detailed description
that is presented later.
[0012] The subject matter disclosed and claimed herein, in one
embodiment thereof, comprises a 2-in-1 bedsheet system capable of
being fully secured around a mattress. The bedsheet system
comprises a top bedsheet and a bottom bedsheet, wherein the bottom
bedsheet is comprised of two pillow pockets on its upper surface
near the head end of the bedsheet to receive a pair of pillows and
one or more side pockets near the pillow pockets to keep small
personal items readily accessible to the user throughout the night
without interfering with his or her sleep. The bottom bedsheet is
generally oversized in relation to the size of the mattress,
thereby enabling the corners of the bedsheet to easily and securely
fold or tuck underneath the mattress. Additionally, a portion of
the top bedsheet is sewn to the bottom bedsheet near the foot end
of the bedsheet, which is opposite to the head end, wherein the top
bedsheet is smaller in size than the bottom bedsheet, but large
enough to overlie a portion of the bottom bedsheet.
[0013] In a further embodiment of the present invention, a novel
double bedsheet with improved stability is disclosed and comprises
a top bedsheet sewn to a bottom bedsheet along the bottom edge and
partially up the sides. The bottom bedsheet is larger in size than
the top bedsheet, wherein the bottom bedsheet also have a size that
is larger than a conventional bedsheet for better tucking
underneath the mattress. A spandex or other elastic strip is also
present along the entire perimeter of the bottom bedsheet to
facilitate a more secure attachment of the bottom bedsheet to the
mattress. Additionally, the bottom bedsheet further comprises a
pair of pillow pockets positioned along its top surface and near
the head end of the bottom bedsheet, and two or more side pockets
along each of the bottom bedsheet's longitudinal sides and also
near the head end of the bedsheet. The pillow pockets are used to
secure a respective pillow in each pocket, and the side pockets may
be used for securing small personal items that the user may need to
access while laying or sleeping in the bed.
[0014] In yet a further embodiment of the present invention, a
2-in-1 bedsheet for covering a mattress and having an elastic
perimeter is disclosed. The 2-in-1 bedsheet is comprised of a top
bedsheet and an oversized bottom bedsheet. When properly installed,
the bottom bedsheet partially encompasses a mattress and has two
pillow pockets and two or more side pockets. The pillow pockets are
positioned along the top surface of the bottom bedsheet near the
head end of the bedsheet, and each pillow pocket comprises an
opening therein for receipt of a pillow. Each of the two or more
side pockets also comprises an opening therein for receipt of small
consumer items and is attached to the longitudinal edges of the
bottom bedsheet so that the same hang downwardly therefrom (i.e.,
in the direction of the floor) immediately adjacent to the mattress
where they may be conveniently accessed throughout the night by the
user. The top bedsheet has a shape substantially similar to the
bottom bedsheet, but with smaller dimensions and is sewn to the
bottom bedsheet along the bottom edge (i.e., the end of the bottom
bedsheet opposite of where the pillow pockets are present) and
approximately a foot or two up each of the sides from the bottom
edge.
[0015] In a still further embodiment of the presently described
invention, a method of installing a two-layer bedsheet onto a
mattress is disclosed and comprises the initial step of attaching
the bottom bedsheet onto the mattress. More specifically, the
bottom bedsheet is generally rectangular in shape, and is comprised
of a spandex or other elastic material along its entire perimeter
such that the elastic material can be expanded to fit over the
mattress and then cinches the bottom bedsheet to the mattress after
installation on the mattress. Next, the remaining excess portions
of the bottom bedsheet are tucked beneath the mattress, wherein a
top bedsheet is attached to the bottom bedsheet along its bottom
edge and at least partially along each of the side edges. Next,
pillows are inserted into the pillow pockets positioned along a top
surface of the bottom bedsheet, and the top bedsheet is then
overlayed over the bottom bedsheet, wherein the unsewn portions of
the top bedsheet cover the mattress and the top bedsheet and need
not be tucked underneath the mattress.
[0016] The improved bedsheet system of the present invention is
particularly advantageous because the novel bedsheet offers much
needed convenience when making a bed, eliminating the need to
reapply standard bedsheets that have fallen onto the floor.
Additionally, the bottom bedsheet remains securely tucked-in, and
the top bedsheet never falls onto the ground. Moreover, the pillows
remain secured and stable in their position within the pillow
pockets, and the side pockets allow a user to place phones,
chargers, wallets and other similar items within arm's reach in
case the same are needed when the user is utilizing the bed.
[0017] To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends,
certain illustrative aspects of the disclosed innovation are
described herein in connection with the following description and
the annexed drawings. These aspects are indicative, however, of but
a few of the various ways in which the principles disclosed herein
can be employed and are intended to include all such aspects and
their equivalents. Other advantages and novel features will become

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0024] The innovation is now described with reference to the
drawings, wherein like reference numerals are used to refer to like
elements throughout. In the following description, for purposes of
explanation, numerous specific details are set forth in order to
provide a thorough understanding thereof. It may be evident,
however, that the innovation can be practiced without these
specific details. In other instances, well-known structures and
devices are shown in block diagram form in order to facilitate a
description thereof. Various embodiments are discussed hereinafter.
It should be noted that the figures are described only to
facilitate the description of the embodiments. They are not
intended as an exhaustive description of the invention and do not
limit the scope of the invention. Additionally, an illustrated
embodiment need not have all the aspects or advantages shown. Thus,
in other embodiments, any of the features described herein from
different embodiments may be combined.
[0025] As noted above, there is a long felt need in the art for an
improved bedsheet system that allows the bedsheet to remain tucked
properly and neatly throughout the night, and in which both the
functional aspect and user convenience have been considered in the
design and manufacture thereof. Additionally, there is a long felt
need in the art for a bedsheet system that comprises pillow pockets
for retaining the pillows in proper position throughout the night,
and that makes it easy and convenient for the user to make his or
her bed after waking up. Further, there is a long felt need in the
art for an improved bedsheet that comprises a plurality of
convenient storage spaces for personal and other items that the
user may require throughout the night, and that is relatively
inexpensive to manufacture and both safe and easy to use.
[0026] The present invention, in one exemplary embodiment, is an
improved bedsheet system that is capable of being fully secured
around a mattress and that is comprised of a top bedsheet and a
bottom bedsheet having an elastic material positioned along its
entire perimeter, a pair of pillow pockets and a plurality of side
pockets. Each of the pair of pillow pockets is positioned along an
upper surface of the bottom bedsheet near the head end and is
comprised of an opening therein for receipt of a pillow. Each of
the plurality of side pockets is positioned along an upper surface
of the bottom bedsheet and near its longitudinal edges so that
items stored therein will hand over the side of the mattress or
bed. The bottom bedsheet is oversized at the corners for further
folding underneath the mattress, and the top bedsheet is sewn to
the bottom bedsheet near the foot end (which is opposite to the
head end) wherein the top bedsheet is smaller in size than the
bottom bedsheet, but large enough to overlie a portion of the
bottom bedsheet.
[0027] Referring initially to the drawings, FIG. 1 illustrates a
perspective view of one potential embodiment of the improved
bedsheet system 100 of the present invention in accordance with the
disclosed architecture, wherein the top bedsheet has been pulled
away to expose the top surface of the bottom bedsheet, but wherein
the top bedsheet remains attached to the bottom bedsheet along its
bottom edge. More specifically, bedsheet system 100 is comprised of
a bottom bedsheet 102 and a top bedsheet 104, wherein the top
bedsheet 104 and bottom bedsheet 102 are sewn together along an
edge 120. The edge 120 is near the foot end 1028 of the bottom
bedsheet 102, and both the bedsheets 102, 104 are sewn together
along the edge 120 such that the top bedsheet 104 is overlaid on
the bottom bedsheet 102 with a fixed and sewn side. In a further
embodiment, the edge 120 may extend along the longitudinal sides of
the bedsheets 102, 104 for a foot or two from the bottom of the top
bedsheet 104.
[0028] The top surface of the bottom bedsheet 102 is further
comprised of two pillow pockets 106, 108 in which pillows are
placed such that the pillows always remain stable within the
pockets 106, 108. More specifically, the pillow pockets 106, 108
are placed near the head end or top end 1022 of the bottom bedsheet
102. Each of the pillow pockets 106, 108 have an opening therein
that is sized such that pillows of different sizes and designs can
be easily placed within the pockets 106, 108. One or more side
pockets 110 are also present on the bottom bedsheet 102 to place
small personal items for convenience of the user. The side pockets
110 are preferably present on the longitudinal sides of the
mattress when the bottom bedsheet 102 is overlaid onto the
mattress. More specifically, the bottom bedsheet 102 is preferably
comprised of longitudinal sides 1024, 1026 having side pockets 110
with an opening therein, wherein the longitudinal sides 1024, 1026
cover the longitudinal sides of the mattress when properly
installed.
[0029] Additionally, the bottom bedsheet 102 is preferably
oversized such that it is easily tucked underneath the mattress for
a secure fit and better stability. In one embodiment, the bottom
bedsheet 102 may have a glove-like bottom end 1028 that fits
securely around the mattress. Near the bottom end or foot end 1028
of the bottom bedsheet 102, the top bedsheet 104, which is similar
in shape but may be smaller in size, is sewn to the bottom bedsheet
102 along the edge 120, wherein the edge 120 is preferably along
the complete length of the bottom end 1028 of both the bottom sheet
102 and the top sheet 104, and perhaps slightly up the longitudinal
sides 1024, 1026 of the bottom bedsheet 102.
[0030] In use, the bottom bedsheet 102 is placed on the top surface
of the mattress and the longitudinal sides 1024, 1026 of the bottom
bedsheet 102 abut along the longitudinal sides of the mattress.
Further, the elastic or spandex edge 105 that is present along the
entire perimeter of the bottom bedsheet 102 helps to better secure
the bottom bedsheet 102 underneath the mattress. The single edge or
seam 120 is considered as a line along which the top bedsheet 104
and the bottom bedsheet 102 are sewn together. The top bedsheet 104
is then placed over the bottom bedsheet 102 once the bottom
bedsheet 102 is properly secured to the mattress, and the pillows
have been inserted into the pillow pockets 106, 108. More
specifically, the top bedsheet 104 is overlaid over the bottom
bedsheet 102 to cover the pillows inserted into the pillow pockets
106, 108 and has dimensions such that the top bedsheet 104 is not
tucked underneath the mattress and the side pockets 110 may or may
not be covered by the top bedsheet 104. The attached/sewn foot end
or bottom end 1028 of the bottom bedsheet 102 and the top bedsheet
104 helps to keep the top bedsheet in proper position throughout
the night and avoids the same from being knocked to the ground.
[0031] The top bedsheet 104 and the bottom bedsheet 102 can be
manufactured of the same material, or from different materials as
per the requirement of the user and/or manufacturing process. A
suitable stretchable fabric, such as an elastic fabric or other
fabric can be used for making both the top bedsheet 104 and the
bottom bedsheet 102. Nonetheless, the fabric should be resistant to
wear and tear caused by sweat, detergents, body oils, lotions, etc.
In one embodiment, a mixture of Spandex and cotton may be used to
manufacture the top sheet 104 and the bottom sheet 102. In a
further embodiment, both the bottom bedsheet 102 and the top
bedsheet 104 have a high thread count of 1800, wherein the fabric
is also breathable, hypoallergenic and wrinkle-free to always have
a clean, fresh look. Further, because the bottom bedsheet 102 is
oversized, the same is suitable for mattresses with a depth of up
to 16 inches. In a further embodiment of the present invention, the
bottom sheet 102 may incorporate an integrated sewn-in mattress
pad.
[0032] FIG. 2 illustrates a partial perspective view of one
potential embodiment of the improved bedsheet system 100 of the
present invention in accordance with the disclosed architecture,
wherein each of the pillow pockets 106, 108 are shown to contain a
pillow 202, 204. More specifically, two pillow pockets 106, 108 are
present on the top surface 210 of the bottom bedsheet 102, and any
conventional pillows 202, 204 may be inserted into the pillow
pockets 106, 108 for secure placement. The pillows 202, 204, once
inserted into the pillow pockets 106, 108, remain stable and do not
move even as the user tosses and turns throughout the night. Each
of the pillow pockets 106,108 are of substantially similar width,
and approximately half of the width of the mattress on which the
bottom bedsheet 102 is overlaid. The pockets 106, 108 may or may
not have a division between them. Further, in one embodiment, the
pillow pockets 106, 108 have dimensions of approximately
20.times.30 inches to fit most regular sized pillows 202, 204.
Alternatively, the pillow pockets 106, 108 may have dimensions or
approximately 24.times.32 inches to fit most oversized pillows 202,
204.
[0033] FIG. 3 illustrates an exploded perspective view of one
potential embodiment of the improved bedsheet system 100 of the
present invention in accordance with the disclosed architecture,
wherein the top bedsheet 104 has not yet been sewn or otherwise
attached to the bottom bedsheet 102. As best shown in FIG. 3, the
bottom bedsheet 102 is preferably longer in both length and width
than the top bedsheet 104, such that bottom bedsheet 102 is tucked
underneath the mattress easily and securely. More specifically, the
width 303 of the bottom bedsheet 102 is greater than the width 304
of the top bedsheet 104. Similarly, the length 301 of the bottom
bedsheet 102 is greater than the length 302 of the top bedsheet
104. Additionally, the top bedsheet 104 preferably does not have
any pockets or slits and is a plain bedsheet, whereas the bottom
bedsheet 102 has two pillow pockets 106, 108 near the head end of
the bottom bedsheet 102 and two side pockets 110 near the lateral
side of the bottom bedsheet 102.
[0034] FIG. 3 also illustrates the sewn edge 120 along the width of
the bottom bedsheet 102 (and near the bottom end) so that the top
bedsheet 104 is always joined together with the bottom bedsheet
102. Nonetheless, the connection between the top bedsheet 104 and
the bottom bedsheet 102 does not need to be stitching and other
suitable attachment means are also contemplated. For example, in
other embodiments other connecting mechanism such as, but not
limited to, hook and loop fasteners, zippers, buttons, snaps,
removable adhesive, may also be used for attaching the top bedsheet
104 and the bottom bedsheet 102 along the edge 120.
[0035] Importantly, the bottom bedsheet 102 and the top bedsheet
104 may be made available in different sizes, configurations,
designs and colors to accommodate user need and/or preference.
Further, each of the bedsheets 102, 104 may further comprise a logo
109, indicia, trademark, geometric pattern, customizable color
and/or font, embroidery, print, and/or image on, for example, its
top surface. Each of the bedsheets 102, 104 may also be comprised
of an antimicrobial coating 111 to prevent the transmission or
spread of germs, bacteria, viruses, microbes and harmful
particulates.
[0036] As previously stated, one or more side pockets 110 may be
provided on one of the longitudinal side portions of the bottom
bedsheet 102, and additional side pocket 110 may be provided on the
other longitudinal side of the bottom bedsheet 102. Each of the
side pockets 110 have an opening therein and are designed to allow
a user to easily place or remove an object, such as a smartphone,
tablet, medicine, eyeglasses, CPAP machine, etc., therefrom without
the need for engagement or disengagement of a fastening member.
[0037] FIG. 4 illustrates a partial perspective view of one
potential embodiment of the improved bedsheet system 100 of the
present invention in accordance with the disclosed architecture,
wherein the connection of the top bedsheet to the bottom bedsheet
is clearly illustrated in sewn edge 120. As shown in this
particular embodiment, the top bedsheet 104 is generally free from
the bottom bedsheet 102 along three of its edges, but is fixedly
attached to the bottom bedsheet 102 along the seam 120. Therefore,
when the bottom bedsheet 102 is placed on a mattress and tucked
underneath the same, the top bedsheet 104 is easily overlaid over
the bottom bedsheet 102 with the connected edge fixed along the
seam 120, and the other three sides covering the pillow pockets and
lateral sides of the mattress (but not attached thereto).
Notwithstanding, as previously noted, the stitched seam 120 may
also extend partly along the longitudinal sides of the top and
bottom bedsheets 104, 102.
[0038] FIG. 5 illustrates a perspective view of one potential
embodiment of the improved bedsheet system 100 of the present
invention in accordance with the disclosed architecture, wherein
the bedsheet system 100 is installed on a mattress 500 on a bed
502. More specifically, the bottom sheet 102 completely covers the
top and side surfaces of the mattress 500 with the side pockets 110
present immediately adjacent to the longitudinal sides of the
mattress 500. Additionally, the top bedsheet 104 is placed over the
bottom bedsheet 102 with a fixed side along the sewn edge 120. The
dimensions of the top bedsheet 104 are such that the top bedsheet
104 covers the top surface of the mattress 500 along with partial
coverage of the longitudinal sides of the mattress 500. The top
sheet 104 may also be used to cover the pillow pockets 106, 108 in
which the pillows 202, 204 are inserted for use. However, since the
bottom bedsheet 102 is oversized, the bottom bedsheet 102 folds
farther around the bottom of the mattress 500 for securement. While
the seam 120 is present, it remains largely invisible when the top
bedsheet 104 is overlaid on the bottom bedsheet 102 thereby
providing aesthetic value to the user. In one embodiment of the
seam 120, a pinch stitch is used for supplying added strength to
the seam.
[0039] Certain terms are used throughout the description and claims
to refer to particular features or components. As one skilled in
the art will appreciate, different persons may refer to the same
feature or component by different names. This document does not
intend to distinguish between components or features that differ in
name but not structure or function. As used herein "improved
bedsheet system", "bedsheet system", "2-in-1 sheet", "2-in-1
spandex bedsheet", and "2-in-1 bedsheet" are interchangeable and
refer to the improved bedsheet system 100 of the present
invention.
[0040] Notwithstanding the forgoing, the bedsheet system 100 of the
present invention can be of any suitable size and configuration as
is known in the art without affecting the overall concept of the
invention, provided that it accomplishes the above stated
objectives. One of ordinary skill in the art will appreciate that
the size, configuration and material of the bedsheet system 100 as
shown in the FIGS. are for illustrative purposes only, and that
many other sizes and shapes of the bedsheet system 100 are well

of the bedsheet system 100 are important design parameters for user
convenience, the bedsheet system 100 may be of any size that
ensures optimal performance during use and/or that suits the user's
needs and/or preferences.
[0041] Various modifications and additions can be made to the
exemplary embodiments discussed without departing from the scope of
the present invention. While the embodiments described above refer
to particular features, the scope of this invention also includes
embodiments having different combinations of features and
embodiments that do not include all of the described features.
Accordingly, the scope of the present invention is intended to
embrace all such alternatives, modifications, and variations as
fall within the scope of the claims, together with all equivalents
thereof.
[0042] What has been described above includes examples of the
claimed subject matter. It is, of course, not possible to describe
