Abstract

A cabinet assembly is provided with a cabinet body sized to be received under a stationary countertop. A plurality of wheels is mounted to the cabinet body for transportation of the cabinet body. A countertop panel is mounted upon the cabinet body. At least one countertop leaf is provided for generally coplanar extension of the countertop panel when disconnected from the stationary countertop.

Claims



1. A cabinet assembly comprising: a cabinet body sized to be received under a stationary countertop; a plurality of wheels mounted to the cabinet body for transportation of the cabinet body; a countertop panel mounted upon the cabinet body; and at least one countertop leaf for generally coplanar extension of the countertop panel when disconnected from the stationary countertop.

The cabinet assembly of claim 1 wherein the countertop panel is mounted for translation upon the cabinet body for a centered position and an offset position; and wherein the at least one countertop leaf is pivotally connected to the countertop panel for a stacked position with the countertop panel in the centered position of the countertop panel and for a coplanar extension position in the offset position of the countertop panel.

The cabinet assembly of claim 1 wherein the countertop panel comprises a pair of panels each mounted for translation upon the cabinet body for an abutting position, and a spaced apart position with a gap therebetween; and wherein the at least one countertop leaf is sized to placed within the gap.

4. The cabinet assembly of claim 3 wherein an aperture is formed within the cabinet body for receipt and storage of the at least one countertop leaf.

5. The cabinet assembly of claim 3 further comprising a serving tray sized to be received within the gap.

The cabinet assembly of claim 1 wherein the cabinet body has at least one drawer aperture formed through opposed sides of the cabinet body; wherein the cabinet assembly further comprises: a bidirectional slide mounted to the cabinet body in the at least one drawer aperture, and a drawer mounted to the bidirectional slide and oriented within the at least one drawer aperture for translation relative to the cabinet body out of either of the opposed sides of the cabinet body.

7. A cabinet system comprising: a stationary cabinet body; a countertop mounted upon the stationary cabinet body, the countertop extending laterally beyond the stationary cabinet body; and a cabinet assembly according to claim 6 oriented beneath the countertop, wherein the cabinet assembly comprises an exposed surface when oriented beneath the countertop that has an ornamental appearance similar to an exposed surface of the stationary cabinet body.

8. A cabinet system comprising: a stationary cabinet body adapted to be mounted to an underlying support surface; a countertop mounted upon the stationary cabinet body, the countertop extending laterally beyond the stationary cabinet body; a longitudinal guide adapted to be mounted to at least one of the stationary cabinet body, the countertop and the underlying support surface; and a cabinet assembly according to claim 1 wherein the cabinet body of the cabinet assembly comprises a mobile cabinet body sized to be received under the countertop; wherein at least one of the mobile cabinet body and the plurality of wheels cooperates with the longitudinal track for guiding of the mobile cabinet body during docking and removal of the mobile cabinet body underneath the countertop, and wherein the cooperation with the longitudinal guide disengages upon removal of the mobile cabinet body relative to the countertop.

The cabinet system of claim 8 wherein the mobile cabinet body comprises a drawer mounted for translation to the mobile cabinet body; and wherein the longitudinal guide provides a reaction force to the mobile cabinet body upon removal, wherein the reaction force is greater than a predetermined force required to translate the drawer relative to the mobile cabinet body.

The cabinet system of claim 8 wherein the longitudinal guide comprises at least a pair of side rollers sized to engage opposed lateral sides of the cabinet body; and wherein a pair of detents are formed in the opposed lateral sides of the mobile cabinet body corresponding to a docked position of the mobile cabinet body.

11. The cabinet assembly of claim 1 further comprising a front ornamental fascia mounted to the cabinet body and extending laterally beyond the cabinet body; wherein the countertop panel extends laterally beyond the cabinet body; and wherein the at least one countertop leaf comprises a pair of countertop leaves each pivotally connected to the cabinet body for generally coplanar extension of the countertop panel in extended positions, and for being concealed beneath the countertop panel and behind the fascia in retracted positions.

12. A cabinet system comprising: a stationary cabinet body adapted to be mounted to an underlying support surface; a countertop mounted upon the stationary cabinet body, the countertop extending laterally beyond the stationary cabinet body; at least one door pivotally connected relative to the countertop to cover an open region under the countertop; an inward offset extension of the door to create a visual appearance of a toe-kick so that the at least one door and inward offset extension collectively create a visual appearance of another stationary cabinet body; and a cabinet assembly according to claim 1 oriented within the open region.

The cabinet system of claim 12 further comprising a mobile cabinet body sized to be received under the countertop; and a plurality of wheels mounted to the mobile cabinet body for transportation of the cabinet body, wherein at least one of the mobile cabinet body and the plurality of wheels cooperates with the longitudinal track for guiding of the mobile cabinet body during docking and removal of the mobile cabinet body underneath the countertop, and wherein the cooperation with the longitudinal guide disengages upon removal of the mobile cabinet body relative to the countertop.

14. The cabinet assembly of claim 1 wherein the cabinet body has at least one externally concealed handle.

15. The cabinet assembly of claim 14 wherein the handle is formed in an underside of the countertop panel.

16. The cabinet assembly of claim 1 wherein the cabinet body has at least one recess sized to provide clearance for plumbing.

17. A cabinet system comprising: a stationary cabinet body adapted to be mounted to an underlying support surface; a countertop mounted upon the stationary cabinet body, the countertop extending laterally beyond the stationary cabinet body; a mobile table sized to be received under the countertop; a plurality of wheels mounted to the mobile table for transportation of the mobile table; and a cabinet assembly according to claim 1, wherein the cabinet assembly is sized to be received under the mobile table.

18. A cabinet system comprising: a stationary cabinet body adapted to be mounted to an underlying support surface; a countertop mounted upon the stationary cabinet body, the countertop extending laterally beyond the stationary cabinet body; a cabinet assembly according to claim 1, wherein the cabinet assembly is sized to be received under the countertop; and a foam tray adapted to be installed under the countertop to provide resistance to the wheels.

19. A cabinet assembly comprising: a cabinet body sized to be received under a stationary countertop; at least one of a drawer and a door mounted for movement relative to the cabinet body; a plurality of wheels mounted to the cabinet body for transportation of the cabinet body; a locking mechanism connected to at least one of the plurality of wheels and the at least one of the drawer and the door; and at least one actuatable handle mounted to the cabinet body in cooperation with the locking mechanism.

20. A cabinet assembly comprising: a cabinet body sized to be received under a stationary countertop; a power storage device supported by the cabinet body; a plurality of wheels mounted to the cabinet body for transportation of the cabinet body; and an electrical connector provided on the cabinet body in electrical connection with the power storage device.
Description



TECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] Various embodiments relate to cabinet assemblies and cabinet systems.

BACKGROUND

[0002] The prior art has provided various stationary cabinet assemblies, as well as modular or mobile cabinet assemblies. Traditional kitchen base cabinetry is typically permanently mounted to walls, flooring, and adjacent cabinets to form a run of cabinetry that is also used to support a countertop.

SUMMARY

[0003] According to at least one embodiment, a cabinet assembly is provided with a cabinet body sized to be received under a stationary countertop. A plurality of wheels is mounted to the cabinet body for transportation of the cabinet body. A countertop panel is mounted upon the cabinet body. At least one countertop leaf is provided for generally coplanar extension of the countertop panel when disconnected from the stationary countertop.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0039] As required, detailed embodiments of the present invention are disclosed herein; however, it is to be understood that the disclosed embodiments are merely exemplary of the invention that may be embodied in various and alternative forms. The figures are not necessarily to scale; some features may be exaggerated or minimized to show details of particular components. Therefore, specific structural and functional details disclosed herein are not to be interpreted as limiting, but merely as a representative basis for teaching one skilled in the art to variously employ the present invention.

[0040] Various embodiments disclosed herein provide cabinet systems, such as cabinet system 30 of FIGS. 1 and 2, with mobile cabinet assemblies 32, 34 (FIG. 2) that can be pulled out from underneath a stationary countertop 36 of the cabinet system 30, and moved around to be used in various different functions. Such functions include a kitchen island, a mobile cart, a preparation station, and the like. Although two cabinet assemblies 32, 34 are illustrated and described, any number of cabinet assemblies 32, 34 can be employed, such as one cabinet assembly 32 or 34. The cabinet assemblies 32, 34 can be installed into a cabinet system 30 with a stationary run of standard cabinetry underneath the countertop 36 and docked in a home position to function akin to a standard stationary cabinet with drawers. Upon removal of the mobile cabinet assemblies 32, 34 from the stationary cabinet system 30, each mobile cabinet assembly 32, 34 exposes an additional countertop work surface 38, 40. Each countertop 38, 40 of the mobile cabinet assemblies 32, 34 can be expanded to provide even larger work surface areas.

[0041] One of the cabinet assemblies 32 is illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4. The cabinet assembly 32 is provided with a cabinet body 42 that sized to be received under the stationary countertop 36 of the cabinet system 30. A plurality of wheels, such as casters 44, is mounted to the cabinet body 42 for transportation of the cabinet body 42. The countertop 38 includes a countertop panel 38 mounted upon the cabinet body 42. The cabinet assembly 32 includes a pair of countertop leaves 46, 48, which extend generally coplanar with the countertop 38 in an extended position of FIG. 3. The casters 44 are oriented as far laterally outboard as permitted by the cabinet body 42 for stability of the cabinet assembly 32 when disconnected from the cabinet system 30, particularly when the leaves 46, 48 are extended.

[0042] Referring again to FIGS. 2 and 3, the cabinet assembly 32 includes a front ornamental fascia 50 that provides an appearance of a front surface of a conventional stationary cabinet assembly to avoid obfuscate an ornamental appearance of the cabinet system 30, while provide a uniform appearance to the cabinet system 30. The ornamental fascia 50 may be oversized relative to the cabinet body 42 to provide a recess 52 for receipt and concealment of the leaves 46, 48 in the retracted position illustrated in FIG. 4. The countertop panel 38 also extends laterally beyond the cabinet body 42 to provide a uniform appearance with the front fascia 50 while concealing the leaves 46, 48. Although the front fascia is described 50, a rear fascia 54 may employ similar characteristics for flexibility and modularity of stowing the cabinet assembly 32.

[0043] With reference again to FIGS. 3 and 4, the cabinet body 42 has a drawer aperture 56 formed through the front fascia 50 and the rear fascia 54. A drawer 58 is mounted to the cabinet body 42 in the drawer aperture 56 via a bidirectional drawer slide 60 so that the drawer 58 can be accessed from either side of the cabinet assembly 42. Therefore, the drawer 58 of the cabinet assembly 32 can be employed in an outward facing direction when stowed, and can be accessed from either side when removed from the cabinet system 30. The drawer 58 may also include a pair of recesses 62, 64 on opposed sides for manual gripping of the drawer 58 for access of the drawer 58. Likewise, the recesses 62, 64 permit the user to grasp the cabinet body 42 for transportation of the cabinet assembly 32.

[0044] The cabinet body 42 may include a cutout for clearance of plumbing in the cabinet system 30.

[0045] A cabinet system 66 is illustrated is illustrated in FIGS. 5-7 according to another embodiment. The cabinet system 66 includes stationary cabinet assemblies 68, 70 supporting a countertop 72 that extends over the stationary cabinet assemblies 68, 70 and an open region 74 between the cabinet assemblies 68, 70. A pair of doors 76, 78 is each pivotally connected to the cabinet system 66 for concealing the open region 74 and for providing an ornamental appearance of a conventional stationary cabinet system. An inward offset extension 80, 82 is provided on each door 76, 78 to create an external visual appearance of a toe-kick so that each door 76, 78 and corresponding extension 80, 82 creates a visual appearance of another stationary cabinet body. By providing a faux toe-kick on the doors 76, 78 a toe-kick is not necessary on a mobile cabinet assembly 84 retained within the open region 74. By avoiding placement of a toe-kick on the mobile cabinet assembly 84, casters 86 on the mobile cabinet assembly 84 can be placed as far outboard as permitted in order to enhance stability of the cabinet assembly 84. Additionally, the faux toe-kick 80, 82 conceals the casters 86 of the mobile cabinet assembly 84. FIG. 7 illustrates the mobile cabinet assembly 84 with a leaf 88 deployed for adding work surface area to a countertop 90.

[0046] Another mobile cabinet assembly 92 is illustrated in FIGS. 8 and 9. The cabinet assembly 92 includes a cabinet body 94 with a toe kick 96 formed about its lower periphery. A countertop panel 98 is mounted for translation upon the cabinet body 94 for a centered position and an offset position. In the centered position, the countertop panel 98 is aligned with the cabinet body 94 as illustrated in FIG. 9. A countertop leaf 100 is pivotally connected to the countertop panel 98. In an offset position of the countertop panel 98, the countertop leaf 100 can be extended to a position generally coplanar with the countertop panel 98 for expanding the countertop work surface as illustrated in FIG. 8. The countertop leaf 100 is pivoted into a stacked position upon the countertop panel 98 in the centered position of FIG. 9 for stowing the cabinet assembly 92.

[0047] FIG. 10 illustrates a cabinet system 102 according to another embodiment. The cabinet system 102 includes a longitudinal guide 104 that is adapted to be mounted to an underlying support surface, such as kitchen flooring 106. The guide 104 could be mounted to a stationary cabinet or a countertop of the cabinet system 102. The guide 104 includes a pair of tracks 108 sized to receive casters 110 of a mobile cabinet assembly 112. The tracks 108 guide the casters 110, and consequently the mobile cabinet assembly 112 during docking and removal of the mobile cabinet assembly 112 into the cabinet system 102. The casters 110 disengage from the tracks 108 upon removal of the mobile cabinet assembly 112 from the cabinet system 102. The tracks 108 each include a positioning feature, such as a raised bump 114 for retaining the casters 110 in the docked position. Alternatively, a compressible foam tray may be employed for securing the casters 110 in a stowed position.

[0048] FIG. 11 illustrates a mobile cabinet assembly 116 according to another embodiment. The mobile cabinet assembly 116 cooperates with a guide 104 similar to the prior embodiment. The cabinet assembly 116 includes a drawer 118 mounted to a cabinet body 120 for translation relative to the cabinet body 120. The longitudinal guide 104 provides a reaction force to the mobile cabinet assembly 116 upon removal. The reaction force is greater than a predetermined force required to translate the drawer 118 relative to the mobile cabinet body 120. That way, the mobile cabinet assembly 116 does not inadvertently move while opening the drawer 118.

[0049] According to another embodiment, a handle 122 is provided on the drawer 118. A lever 124 is mounted inside the handle 122 for actuation. According to one embodiment, the mobile cabinet assembly 112 includes a locking mechanism connected to the casters 110. Actuation of the lever 124 unlocks the casters 110 for movement of the mobile cabinet assembly 116.

[0050] According to another embodiment, the locking mechanism is connected to the drawer 118. Actuation of the lever 124 unlocks the drawer 118 for opening the drawer 118. Without actuation of the lever 124, a user can grasp the handle 122 and move the mobile cabinet assembly 116.

[0051] According to yet another embodiment, actuation of the lever 124 locks the drawer 118 so that a user can grasp the handle 122, actuate the lever 124 to lock the drawer 118, and use the handle 122 to move the mobile cabinet assembly 116.
