Description

[0001] The present invention is a non-provisional application which claims priority from U.S. provisional patent application 61/565,335 by inventor Ryan Wang entitled Hair Extension and Application Method Therefor, filed Nov. 30, 2011, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0002] The present invention relates to hair extensions and, more particularly, to do-it-yourself (DIY) hair extensions and application methods.

DISCUSSION OF RELATED ART

[0003] Hair additions or hair extensions are added to a wearer's head to add the appearance of more, longer and/or different colored hair. Conventional hair extensions have an adhesive strip on only one side of the hair extension. The hair extensions of the prior art are utilized by applying two hair extensions on the same portion of hair or folding a hair extension around a portion of hair, making the portion of hair heavy, which can irritate the wearer's hair and scalp. These extensions may also give the appearance of an unnatural coloration on the roots of the hair. Other conventional hair extensions rely on heat or clips to apply the hair extension in a wearer's hair. Clip-on extensions are generally less secure than adhesive-type extensions and heat applied hair extensions generally require a professional and take a long time to apply the extensions.

[0004] A variety of different inventors have created various configurations for hair additions and hair extensions. For example, Okyo Sthair in United States patent publication US20090071490 Self-Applicable Integrated Hair Addition, published on Mar. 19, 2009, describes an integrated hair addition having a central elliptical opening adapted to be intermingled with natural hair of the wearer to supplemented in other areas, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference. Okyo Sthair in United States patent publication US20050092342 Seamless Self Adhesive Hair Extension System published May 5, 2005, later issued as U.S. Pat. No. 7,201,171 entitled Seamless Hair Extension System and Method of Use on Apr. 10, 2007, describes a seamless hair extension having connection by self adhesive, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference.

[0005] Okyo Sthair in United States patent publication US20070006890 Do-it Yourself Removable/Reusable Non-chemical Highlights & Hair Extension, published on Jun. 11, 2005, describes a removable and reusable hair extension and a method including separating a user's along a part line, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference. This publication application issued into Okyo Sthair in U.S. Pat. No. 7,533,676 entitled Do-it Yourself Removable/Reusable Non-chemical Highlights and Hair Extensions issued May 19, 2009, and describes a method of attaching a hair extension including a polyurethane-based support and rectangular adhesive tape, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference.

[0006] As can be seen, there is a need for an improved hair extension and application method.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0007] A hair extension includes a hair weft made of individual strands of human or synthetic hair. Far infrared powder mixed with very thin Poly-Urethane (PU) and/or Keratin Glue deposited on the human or synthetic hair weft. to create connecting strip(s) on the hair weft(s). A connection strip receives connected ends of the individual strands of human or synthetic hair. A webbing of silk or synthetic lace is also incorporated with hair weft to form a PU and/or Keratin skin weft. A top adhesive strip is disposed on a top side of the connection skin well and a bottom adhesive strip is disposed on a bottom side of the connection skin weft. The adhesive strip has a left side and a right side of the silicone based protective backing.

[0008] The top adhesive strip further includes a adhesive protective backer and top adhesive strip backers divided by a parting line to form a left side of the top adhesive strip backer covering the left side of the top adhesive strip and a right side of the top adhesive strip backer covering the right side of the top adhesive strip. The bottom adhesive strip further includes a bottom adhesive strip backers and top adhesive strip backers divided by a parting line to form a left side of the bottom adhesive strip backer covering the left side of the bottom adhesive strip and a right side of the bottom adhesive strip backer covering the right side of the bottom adhesive strip.

[0009] The method for applying a hair extension, includes the steps of peeling off one side of an adhesive protector to expose adhesive on a first side of a hair weft; parting the hair at a desired application area; applying the first side of the hair weft to hair below the part approximately 1/8 of an inch from a wearer's scalp; peeling off a second adhesive protector to expose adhesive on the second side of the hair weft; and applying hair above the part onto the adhesive on the second side of the hair weft to secure the wearer's hair to each side of the hair weft.

[0010] The method for applying a hair extension may also include the step of forming a bottom row section of hair partings; forming a second row section of hair partings above the bottom row section of hair partings; forming a third row section of hair partings above the second row section of hair partings; forming a fourth row section of hair partings above the third row section of hair partings; forming a fifth row section of hair partings above the fourth row section of hair partings; forming a sixth row section of hair partings above the fifth row section of hair partings; or forming a seventh section of hair partings above the sixth row section of hair partings. The application of six rows of hair extensions, with a seventh section around the top of the head, is the approximate maximum number of rows in order for the wearer's hair to maintain a natural look, but more or less rows or sections may be applied depending on the particular coloration, style or look the wearer wants to achieve. The preferred method of applying the hair extensions of the present invention is from the bottom up, as it is generally makes application easier, but it's also possible to apply the hair extensions from the top down. Additionally, a user can attach the hair extension(s) of the present invention to facial hair, bangs, cornrows, dreadlocks, wigs or toupees. For facial hair and bangs, only one face of the adhesive strip of the hair extension is required to attach to wearer's facial area or hairline.

[0011] The hair extensions of the present invention are preferably worn for a maximum of about 4 to 6 weeks, after which, the hair extensions may be preferably removed using an adhesive remover, such as adhesive removers made of organic wetting agents, petroleum hydrocarbons, lemon oils, citrus oils, and lanolin. After removal of the hair extensions, the embodiment of the present hair extension, which is reusable, is preferred to be cleansed by using mild detergent known as detoxifier shampoo or deep cleansing shampoo to remove the residue of the adhesive deposit in the PU and/or Keratin skin weft and conditioned. After the skin weft has completely dried, the adhesive strip can be placed back onto both sides of the PU and/or Keratin skin weft extension for future use.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

[0050] The following detailed description is of the best currently contemplated modes of carrying out exemplary embodiments of the invention. The description is not to be taken in a limiting sense, but is made merely for the purpose of illustrating the general principles of the invention, since the scope of the invention is best defined by the appended claims.

[0051] Broadly, an embodiment of the present invention provides do-it-yourself hair extensions and an application method for applying hair extensions in a wearer's hair. The hair extensions may provide the appearance of highlighted, low-lighted, modern and/or fashionable color shade, add different texture locks and/or longer, thicker and fuller hair while minimizing any tension to the wearer's scalp or hair.

[0052] In one embodiment of the preferred invention, far-infrared powder is added to a polyurethane ("PU") and/or keratin weft of natural human hair, modacrylic copolymer fibers or conventional synthetic hair that is used to make a hair extension.

[0053] Referring to FIGS. 1 through 3, the hair skin weft has a hair portion 22 that is connected to a connection strip 20. The connection strip 20 is made by placing a webbing of silk strip or synthetic lace strip above the top of the bottom track of the hair weft prior to applying the polyurethane and/or keratin adhesive. More specifically, harding the silk or synthetic lace with PU and/or Keration glue first and left to dry and sized to strip(s) to be ready for use. By placing one track of the hair weft onto a flat glass surface and taped to secure, with a thin webbing of translucent silk or synthetic lace laid top track of the hair weft. Alternatively, the webbing of lace may be wrapped around a single track of hair weft, on top of the hair weft or the webbing of lace can be incorporated in between 2 tracks of hair weft. While silk lace is preferred, synthetic lace may also be used. The lace may be any color, such as flesh, pink, light brown, medium or dark brown, black or transparent.

[0054] The first thin layer of the Polyurethane and/or Keratin adhesive is applied onto the bottom track of the hair weft 86 where it taped and secured on the flat glass surface in order to create clean connection strip(s) line and left to dry. Once the track of hair weft dried then reversing to the opposite side for the PU and/or Keratin glue application. Immediately placing the webbing of silk or synthetic lace 88 above the track of the hair weft 86 ready for the second PU and/or Keratin glue application. Once the position of the bottom track of the hair weft 86 and the webbing of silk or synthetic lace 88 is secured onto the flat glass surface for the second application. Once the hair weft air dried or blow dried, it can be applied the third application to create double faced skin weft(s). By sanding lightly on the new formed PU and/or Keratin skin connection weft could create much smoother surface for maximum capacity to join Adhesive strip(s). Incorporated 2 track of hair wefts could even create more weight in the skin weft(s), if more and thicker hair look of the extension(s) is desired. The solution with that is, the top track of the hair weft 87 is applied and dried such as method of hair weft 86 first application. Then hair weft 87 is ready to be placed on top of the bottom track of the hair weft 86 with the webbing of silk or synthetic lace incorporated within. Before the 2.sup.nd application. Applying bonding adhesive glue on the hair track 86 and 87, joining them together with silk or synthetic lace in between for the 2.sup.nd application. Once the new formed skin connection weft is dried, then ready to apply the final coat on the both side of extension skin connection strip(s). The PU and/or Keratin glue is now mixed with the Far Infrared Powder, applied onto the new form hair weft, and allowed to dry. Once the PU and/or Keratin glue has dried after 3.sup.rd application, the hair weft is turned over and a thin coat of PU and//or Keratin glue incorporated with Far Infrared Powder is applied for the forth time over the entire connection strip area. The purpose of using flat glass surface is to create smooth surface and clean line of connection strip(s). In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, each side of the hair weft is coated two times with a thin layer of PU and/or keratin glue. The PU and/or keratin glue can be applied automatically or manually with a brush or by any known application tool, machine or method. Utilizing the webbing of lace in connection with the tracks of hair weft and applying three layers of PU and/or keratin glue, provides for a strong, long-lasting hair extension that is not prone to breaking when the hair extension is removed from the wearer's head and is reusable for up to approximately six months.

[0055] In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the second and third coats of PU and/or keratin glue is mixed with a non-toxic, odorless far infrared powder (FIP), such as that manufactured by Wuhan Eco Pioneer Technology Co., Ltd (ECOPIO). The far infrared powder includes oxides having far infrared function, such as TiO.sub.2, Al.sub.2O.sub.3, or ZnO or the like. Far infrared rays of the wavelength from about 4 to 14 microns may be emitted by the FIP after absorbing outside heat. These rays are consistent with the vibration frequency of atoms and molecules of human cells and can be easily absorbed into the body. Accordingly, applying a hair extension that has been treated with FIP and is exposed to outside heat may increase scalp blood flow and circulation.

[0056] By mixing far infrared powder into the PU and/or keratin glue, the far infrared powder stays in the hair extension without falling out and will be close to the scalp when applied on the wearer's head. Of course, it is not absolutely necessary that the far infrared powder be mixed in the PU and/or keratin glue, and may be applied on to the hair weft after the PU and/or keratin glue has dried or in another area. In one embodiment, the FIP may be applied more than once to the well prior to applying a double-sided adhesive strip, as shown in FIG. 4. The far infrared powder 24 can be applied from a bottle of far infrared powder 25 as shown in FIG. 2, mixing 24 into PU and/or kerain glue applying by a brush 89 onto the silk lace 88 in between bottom hair well 86 and top hair well 87. While the above description describes using a well treated with FIP, the methods described herein may be applied to not only the FIP-treated hair weft, but also to conventional hair wefts.

[0057] After the final layer of PU and/or keratin glue has fully dried, the track(s) of hair well is manually 90 or machine cut to the desired weight and size for the hair extensions. The top edge of the track(s) of hair well is also manually or machine cut to provide for a substantially smooth edge which enhances the appearance of the hair extension. The cut hair skin well can be any width and length, and have any thickness or weight, but a preferable size for the PU and/or Keratin skin well used as a hair extension is approximately 3 inches long, 1/3 of an inch wide, holding 8 grams, of hair and approximately 18 inches of length in hair extension(s). In this embodiment of the preferred invention, 1/3 of an inch wide of the PU and/or Keratin skin weft can hold up to 12 grams of various lengths of hair extensions. Using substantially more than 8 grams of hair with approximately 18 inches of length of hair extension(s) tends to increase the likelihood that the hair will not adequately bond with the PU and/or keratin glue and result in shedding. Using substantially less than 8 grams of hair, particularly for longer hair extensions, tends to diminish the appearance of the hair extension and may appear "stringy" when applied to a wearer's hair. A hair extension weighing approximately 8 grams is light enough so as to minimize any stress on the wearer's hair and scalp. A hair extension having a preferred width of approximately 1/3 of an inch assists in making the hair extension substantially undetectable when worn by the wearer. And a hair extension having a preferred width of approximately 3 inches provides for a hair extension of manageable size and easier D.I.Y. application.

[0058] Unlike conventional hair extensions, the hair extensions of the present invention includes double-sided tape on each side of the hair extension, permitting both sides of the hair extension to attach to the wearer's hair. While double-sided tape is described, a variety of adhesives may be used to secure the hair extension to the wearer's hair.

[0059] In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the hair extension is applied to the wearer's hair using a clear, FDA approved, water-resistant, hypoallergenic, double-sided adhesive medical tape. The double-sided adhesive strip tape of the present invention is a partially silicone-based lace front tape often utilized with the application of toupees or wig needs. This type of tape has a much greater adhesive quality than that utilized with conventional hair extensions because the double-sided adhesive strip tape of the present invention attaches only to the wearer's hair, while the tape used with conventional hair extensions is designed to at least partially adhere to itself. The double-sided adhesive strip tape of the present invention is easily removable by an adhesive remover made of, for example, organic wetting agents, petroleum hydrocarbons, lemon oils, citrus oils, and/or lanolin.

[0060] It is preferred to have a hair extension with the PU and/or Keratin skin connection strip 20, having a top connection strip 21 and a bottom connection strip 23. The 2 adhesive strips 30 are described as the bottom adhesive strip 30B and the top adhesive strip 30A. Both include the bottom protective backers 34,35 and the top protective backers 36, 37, which are bounded by an adhesive strip parting line 33. The bottom adhesive strip 30B has adhesive strip protective backer(s)(34, 35) comprising a right side of the top adhesive strip protective backer 34 and a left side of the top adhesive strip protective backer 35. The top adhesive strip 30A also has adhesive strip protective backer(s) comprising a right side of the top adhesive strip protective backer 36 and a left side of the top adhesive strip protective backer 37. First remove the bottom protective backers 34 and 35 from the bottom adhesive strip 30B and attach firmly to the connection strip 23 of the PU and/or Keratin skin weft. Then remove the top protective backers 36 and 37 from the second adhesive strip which is the top adhesive strip 30A, attached to the connection strip 21 of the PU and/or Keratin skin weft to form a complete double faced PU and/or Keratin skin weft incorporated with the Far Infrared Powder with two double sided adhesive strips joined to the connection strip to completely form a skin weft hair extension(s). Removing the bottom adhesive strip protective backer is preferably done by peeling the left side of the top adhesive strip protective backer 35 from the adhesive strip 30B at the adhesive strip parting line 33. Removing the right side of the adhesive strip backer 34 can be done by peeling the right side of the top adhesive strip backer 34 away at the adhesive strip parting line 33.

[0061] The top adhesive strip 30A includes the bottom protective backers 36, 37 a left side and a right side. The left side and the right side of the top adhesive strip 30A are bounded by a bottom adhesive strip parting line 33. The bottom adhesive strip 30A has adhesive strip protective backers comprising a left side of the top adhesive strip protective backer 37 and a right side of the top adhesive strip backer 36. The left side of the top adhesive strip protective backer 37 and the right side of the top adhesive strip protective backer 36 can be peeled away from the parting line 33 in a similar fashion as described for the top adhesive strip 30A. The top adhesive strip parting line 33 also preferably bisects the top adhesive strip 30A and the top adhesive strip protective backer.

[0062] The adhesive strip parting line 33 preferably bisects the adhesive strip 30 (30A, 30B,) although it can be anywhere along the adhesive strip 30A or 30B. The adhesive strip 30A or 30B having an adhesive parting line 33 is preferred over a one-piece adhesive strip protective backer because it assists the wearer in peeling off the adhesive strip protective backer.

[0063] Referring now to FIG. 5, to apply a hair extension (having 2 adhesive strips on both sides of the PU and/or Keratin skin weft, as described above), a part is made in the wearer's hair where application of the extension is desired, creating a lower section of hair below the part and an upper section of hair above the part. Next, the protective backing 34, 35 are peeled off to reveal the clear, water-resistant double-sided adhesive strip tape 30B of the connection strip. Then, the extension is pressed firmly into the lower section of the wearer's hair about one eighth (1/8) of an inch away from the scalp. This completes the attachment of the extension on the lower section of the hair. Then peel off the protective backers 36,37 from the clear, water-resistant double-sided adhesive strip tape 30A and about one fourth (1/4) of an inch thick of the upper section of hair is laid straight naturally with a little tension over the hair extension. Now the upper section of the hair is firmly pressed into the top strip 30A and pinch the entire connection strip(s) firmly to secure the placement. Once the extension is placed onto the wearer's hair the extensions can be washed, conditioned, blow dried, flat ironed, curled, or colored. During the first and the second shampooing after 48 hours of the application, only apply hair conditioner and/or hair conditioning spray from the middle to the ends of hair and not directly onto where the connection strip area with the hair extension(s) is attached, to avoid shortening the length of the wearing time. The hair extension(s) is to be worn temporarily and/or for the duration of 4-6 weeks. For removal process, the wearer could use the releasing oil to remove the adhesive residue on the tape for easy removal of extensions. Once the extensions have been worn, taken off, shampooed, conditioned and completely dried, the adhesive strips can be placed onto both sides of the PU and/or Keratin skin weft extension again for future use.

[0064] It should be noted that when the hair extension is pressed into the lower section of the wearer's hair, it can be placed at a variety of distances away from the scalp (e.g., 1/16'', 1/8'', 1/4'', 1/2'', 1''); however, placing the hair extension approximately 1/8 of an inch away from the scalp provides for optimal security and wearing time, and appears more natural and less noticeable. It also should be noted that the length and thickness of PU and/or Keratin skin weft could affect wearer's comfort, it can be 3 inches in length and not excess 6 inches for the easy application. Preferably the PU and/or Keratin weft should be 1/4, 1/3 or 1/2 of an inch of connection strip for less noticeable on wear's scalp connecting area. It is not recommend to make the connection strip larger than an inch in width because the weare's extension(s) where the join area could easily be discovered, although it could extend the wearing time because more adhesive attached. For the best in result, 1/4 and 1/3 of an inch of connection PU and/or Keratin skin weft in width is the most comfortable and the less noticeable extensions(s) attachment width for wearers.

[0065] Referring now to FIG. 6, a section method may be used to separate the hair into sections where multiple hair extensions may be applied in multiple sections. Hair along each part line may be divided into an upper and lower portion. The upper portion may be temporarily swept up away from the part line. After peeling off one side (side B) of the adhesive protector, revealing the adhesive, the adhesive of the weft is pressed into the lower portion of the wearer's natural hair (about a 1/8 of an inch away from the scalp). Once attached, the top side (side A) of the adhesive protector may be removed to reveal the adhesive on the other side of the weft. The hair above the part line is pulled straight down with a little tension and laid naturally over the extension and firmly pressed into the side A adhesive to create full, secure placement of the hair extension in the wearer's hair. The process may be repeated with one or more hair part lines, for example, as shown in FIG. 6. The hair can be organized by section including a bottom row section 41, a second row section 42, a third row section 43, a fourth row section 44, a fifth row section 45, a sixth row section 46, and a seventh section 47 if necessary. Indeed, the hair can be organized in any number of sections, but applying hair extensions to any more than approximately seven sections reduces the natural appearance of the hair.

[0066] The hair extensions may be formed from various materials known in the art, including human hair, modacrylic copolymer fibers, or conventional synthetic hair, and may be formed in various colors. The colored hair extensions may be coated with silicone 3-6 times to protect the coloration and seal the cuticle for longer usage.

[0067] Hair extensions described above and applied in the above manner may last for about 4-6 weeks of normal wear. To remove the hair extension, as shown in FIG. 7, a user may simply apply a hair remover made of, for example, organic wetting agents, petroleum hydrocarbons, lemon oils, citrus oils, and lanolin. The hair extension of the present invention is reusable and a user may utilize replacement double-sided adhesive strips and attach them on the PU and/or keratin weft connection strip 20 to reapply the hair extension. The adhesive composition of the double-sided adhesive strips may include wax, urethane acrylic, silicone, liquid, putty and rice glues, and the like. Adhesive removal agent 52 can be applied to an adhesive removal area 51 using an adhesive removal bottle 50 having an adhesive removal spray tip 53. The adhesive removal agent is preferably a liquid.

[0068] The present invention may be altered and can produce similar products for toupees for men and women, facial hair, bangs, cornrows, dreadlocks and full wigs. The present invention may further be altered for other hair extension items, such as feathers, jewelry or beads.

[0069] Once the hair extension(s) have been worn for about 4-6 weeks, the hair extension(s) can be removed by spraying an adhesive remover made of organic wetting agents, petroleum hydrocarbons, lemon oils, citrus oils, and lanolin. The adhesive remover should be allowed to sit on the PU and/or keratin weft for a minute or two. Then the PU and/or keratin weft should be gently rubbed (for example, in circular motions) to lessen the adhesive properties. More adhesive remover may utilized if necessary and as needed, and once the adhesive hold is not as strong, hair extension(s) may be gently peeled off. It is important not pull to vigorously on the extension to avoid damaging the extension. By applying the adhesive remover using a spray bottle rather than pouring the adhesive remover into the hair, the user has more control over the amount adhesive remover applied and will generally use less adhesive remover, and reduce the chance of getting adhesive remover in the wearer's face or eyes.

[0070] The hair extensions of the preferred embodiment are reusable by cleaning the residue of the adhesive from the PU and/or Keratin skin weft with mild detergent such as deep cleansing shampoo or detoxifying shampoo and allow the hair extension(s) to dry completely after conditioning. Once the hair extension is dry, replacement of double sided adhesive strips maybe applied onto the PU and/or keratin skin weft again for the future use.

[0071] It should be understood, of course, that the foregoing relates to exemplary embodiments of the invention and that modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the following claims.
