pillow replacer for sleeping. Further, the different positions of
such a sofa bed may be used by multiple people.
[0019] In the following description, numerous specific details are
set forth to provide a thorough understanding of the present
invention. However, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art
that the present invention may be practiced without such specific
details.
[0020] As discussed in the Background section, sofa beds are
typically designed with a back rest and a seat deck. The back rest
is used primarily for resting the back of the user of the sofa. The
seat deck is used primarily for sitting by the user of the sofa. In
a sofa bed, the back rest may be configured to be pushed back
thereby forming a bed. However, sofa beds are currently limited in
the number of positions available for sitting, sleeping or resting.
If, however, a sofa bed had the functionality of having different
positions that may be used for various activities, such as sitting,
sleeping or resting, then the user would have a greater selection
of settings to add to the user's comfort and enjoyment of the sofa
bed. Hence, there is a need in the art for a sofa bed with the
functionality of having different positions used for various
activities, such as sitting, sleeping or resting, to add to the
user's comfort and enjoyment of the sofa bed.
[0021] The sofa bed of the present invention is configured with the
functionality of having different positions used for various
activities, such as sitting, sleeping or resting, to add to the
user's comfort and enjoyment of the sofa bed as discussed below in
connection with FIGS. 1-7.
[0022] FIG. 1 illustrates a view of a sofa bed in its normal
resting position (referred to herein as the "sofa position"). FIG.
2 illustrates the interconnection of the legs to the underneath of
the seat deck. FIG. 3 illustrates a view of the sofa bed with the
two sections of the back rest being partially laid down (referred
to herein as the "lounge position"). FIG. 4 illustrates a view of
the sofa bed with the two sections of the back rest being
completely laid down (referred to herein as the "bed position").
FIG. 5 illustrates a view of the sofa bed with one of the two
sections of the back rest being laid down (referred to herein as
the "split back rest position"). FIG. 6 illustrates a view of the
sofa bed with the armrests being at 20 degrees above the level of
the seat deck. FIG. 7 illustrates a view of the sofa bed with the
armrests being at 45 degrees above the level of the seat deck.
[0023] Referring to FIG. 1, FIG. 1 illustrates a sofa bed 100 in
accordance with an embodiment of the present invention in its
normal resting position (referred to herein as the "sofa
position"). Sofa bed 100 may include two main sections, a seat deck
101 and a back rest 102. Seat deck 101 is used primarily for
sitting by the user of sofa bed 100. Each side of seat deck 101
includes an arm rest 103A-B. Arm rests 103A-B may collectively or
individually be referred to as arm rests 103 or arm rest 103,
respectively. Each arm rest 103 is configured to be placed in one
of three positions as discussed and illustrated below in connection
with FIGS. 1, 6 and 7. FIG. 1 illustrates arm rests 103 both being
in a resting position (lying flat along the level of seat deck
101).
[0024] Back rest 102 is used primarily for resting the back of the
user of sofa bed 100. In one embodiment, back rest 102 may consist
of two sections 104A-B, each configured to be placed in one of
three positions as discussed and illustrated below in connection
with FIGS. 1, 3 and 4. FIG. 1 illustrates sections 104A-B both
being in an upright position.
[0025] Referring again to FIG. 1, seat deck 101 may include two
front legs 105A-B and two rear legs (only 105C is shown) to provide
support to seat deck 101 when a user sits on seat deck 101. A more
detailed discussion of the interconnection of legs 105A-C to the
underneath of seat deck 101 is provided below in connection with
FIG. 2.
[0026] Referring to FIG. 2, FIG. 2 illustrates the interconnection
of legs 105A-D to the underneath of seat deck 101 (FIG. 1) in
accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. Legs 105A-D
may collectively or individually be referred to as legs 105 or leg
105, respectively. Referring to FIG. 2, in one embodiment, each leg
105 of sofa bed 100 (FIG. 1) is interconnected to the underneath of
seat deck 101 via a leg frame 201. Leg 105 is coupled to leg frame
201 via bolts 202A-D and washers 203A-D. Bolts 202A-D may
collectively or individually be referred to as bolts 202 or bolt
202, respectively. Further, washers 203A-D may collectively or
individually be referred to as washers 203 or washer 203,
respectively. Bolts 202 may be tightened to leg frame 201 via
hexagon nuts (only 204A is shown) which may be tightened using a
spanner 205. Further, an Allen key 206 may be used to drive bolts
202.
[0027] As discussed above, sofa bed 100 has the functionality of
being in different positions as discussed below in connection with
FIGS. 3-7.
[0028] Referring to FIG. 3, FIG. 3 illustrates a view of sofa bed
100 with sections 104A-B of back rest 102 being partially laid down
(referred to herein as the "lounge position") in accordance with an
embodiment of the present invention. Sections 104A-B are both
placed in the second or intermediate position between being in the
upright position (shown in FIG. 1) and in the laid down position
(shown and discussed below in connection with FIG. 4).
[0029] Referring to FIG. 4, FIG. 4 illustrates a view of sofa bed
100 with sections 104A-B of back rest 102 being completely laid
down (referred to herein as the "bed position") in accordance with
an embodiment of the present invention. Sections 104A-B are both
placed in the third or laid down position thereby having sofa 100
form a bed. Sections 104A-B though may not necessarily be in the
same position. An example of such an embodiment is discussed below
in connection with FIG. 5.
[0030] Referring to FIG. 5, FIG. 5 illustrates a view of sofa bed
100 with one of the two sections 104A-B of back rest 102 being laid
down (referred to herein as the "split back rest position"). While
FIG. 5 illustrates section 104B of back rest 102 being in the
upright position and section 104A of back rest 102 being in the
laid down position, both sections 104A-B have the capability of
being in a different position than the other section.
[0031] In addition to sections 104A-B of back rest 102 having the
capability of being in one of three positions, arm rests 103A-B
(FIGS. 1 and 2-5) have the capability of being in one of three
positions. As discussed above, arm rests 103 were in the laid down
position as illustrated in FIG. 1. FIG. 6 illustrates a view of
sofa bed 100 with armrests 103 being at 20 degrees above the
horizontal level of seat deck 101 in accordance with an embodiment
of the present invention. Each arm rest 103 may be said to be in
its second position or intermediate position.
[0032] Referring to FIG. 7, FIG. 7 illustrates a view of sofa bed
100 with armrests 103 being at 45 degrees above the horizontal
level of seat deck 101 in accordance with an embodiment of the
present invention. Each arm rest 103 may be said to be in its third
position or upright position.
[0033] Additionally, arm rests 103 and sections 104A-B of back rest
102 may each independently be in one of the positions discussed
above. For example, FIG. 8 illustrates a view of sofa bed 100 in a
position referred to herein as the "head rest position" in
accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. As
illustrated in FIG. 8, section 104A of back rest 102 is placed in
the sofa position; whereas, section 104B of back rest 102 is placed
in the bed position. Further, arm rest 103B is placed at 45 degrees
above the horizontal level of seat deck 101; whereas, arm rest 103A
is placed in the resting position.
[0034] By having a sofa bed with the functionality of having
different positions used for various activities, such as sitting,
sleeping or resting, the user's comfort and enjoyment of the sofa
bed is improved.
[0035] Although the sofa bed is described in connection with
several embodiments, it is not intended to be limited to the
specific forms set forth herein, but on the contrary, it is
intended to cover such alternatives, modifications and equivalents,
as can be reasonably included within the spirit and scope of the
