Insert Device Holding Mount
Abstract
A mounting system made to hold secure a custom insert device and
be attached securely to a water sport board or vessel by an
adhesive layer. The purpose of the insert device holding mount is
to provide a small, lightweight, durable, reliable and convenient
electronic device holder that can be unobtrusively attached to a
water sport board or vessel and endure rough water environments and
conditions. Our patent application includes our primary insert
device as a water resistant time piece device, yet we plan to
design a variety of insert devices with different functions for the
benefit of the users. The device holding mount will be made of a
soft, yet rigid water and weather resistant material. The material
we will use is EVA foam, which is a type of polyethylene foam
material. This EVA material is commonly used as a durable padding
material in a wide variety of products. In the future different
types of water and weather resistant materials may be used for the
insert device holding mount if we find a more suitable or
alternative material that will function using the same design
elements stated herein.

Description
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The invention disclosed herein relates to the first small,
unobtrusive surface mount insert device holding mount which adheres
directly to a smooth planar surface for use primarily on a water
sport board or vessel and is designed to hold an array of small
water resistant insert device modules such as a time piece. This is
the first time the concept of mounting a time piece or such device
to a water sport board has been implemented in this manner.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Water board sports athletes have had the availability of a
wrist watch as an informational device. Yet there are many who
prefer not to wear a wrist watch or other device attached to their
wrist while enjoying their water sports activities. A wrist watch
can irritate the wrist, feel unbalanced and cumbersome and cause
other annoyances to the person wearing the wrist watch. Another
problem with a wrist watch that is worn only for water sports, is
that it may be forgotten at home or in the car and therefore not
available during a water sports session.
[0003] Therefore, it is desirable to have a suitable water
resistant time piece or other desired device mounted directly on
the water sport board in a convenient to view area. A water
resistant time piece module and water sport board mount apparatus
have been developed by the present inventor. The time piece and
module mount will provide the user with confidence that the time
piece will always be there on their board without them having to
remember to bring it with them. Time can be conveniently monitored
with a clock mounted on the essential piece of equipment for their
sport. The mount and clock are small and sleek and will not hinder
the user in any way. Upon further consideration, it is desirable to
have other devices in addition to a time piece on the water sport
board or vessel. Therefore the holding mount is designed to allow
interchanging a variety of same sized insert device items including
compass, thermometer and others.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
[0004] An object of this invention is to provide a mounting system
for a water resistant time piece or a variety of other water
resistant devices to be attached onto a water sport board or
vessel. A further object of this invention is to give the water
sport enthusiast the option of mounting desirable objects to their
water sport boards or vessels in a convenient location of their
choice, rather than have the item attached to their body or in a
pocket out of sight and inconvenient to use.
[0005] Preferred embodiments of the present invention comprise an
insert device module holding mount and water resistant time piece
insert device module. The device holding mount has a top surface, a
bottom surface and a center cavity in the top surface. The bottom
surface of each device holding mount has an adhesive coating that
readily adheres to a flat, planar surface of the water sport board
or vessel. The insert device module holding mount may be adhered to
a smooth surface of the board or vessel in any convenient
location.
[0006] Further preferred embodiments include a logo or an emblem
(such as a company logo, name or trademark and/or a stylistic
design or message) disposed on the top surface of the insert device
module holding mount and the insert device module unit.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0014] FIG. 1 is a top side view of the entire multi-piece water
sport board insert device holding mount and the insert device being
a water resistant time piece system 1 according to a preferred
embodiment of the present invention. Generally, the water sport
board insert device holding mount and insert device system 1 shown
in FIG. 1 is comprised of multiple elements. The holder mount 2 and
the inset clock 11 which is press fit into the holder cavity 4 in
the top surface 3 of the holder mount 2.
[0015] In FIG. 2 the holding cavity 4 in the top surface 3 has
vertical interior sides 5 and is slightly deeper than the insert
(FIG. 4) thickness. Exterior sides 7 of the holding mount will be
angled or curved to deflect water energy. The holder mount 2 is
preferably made from, but not limited to, soft, rubbery or flexible
material with sufficient durability and water resistance or
compatibility to withstand prolonged exposure to sea water.
Suitable materials include, but are not limited to, EVA foam or a
variety of closed cell polyethylene foams. Alternatively, other
suitable materials suitable to be mounted on the surface of a water
sport board or vessel (FIG. 6) by a user for the purpose of holding
a custom insert device or object represented here as 11. FIG. 3 In
the preferred embodiment, the bottom surface 8 of the insert device
holding mount 2 further has an adhesive coating 9 that is protected
prior to use by a peel-away paper cover 10. The paper cover 10 will
be peeled off immediately before application, to expose the
adhesive layer 9. The adhesive coating 9 will readily adhere to the
upper surface (or deck) 16 of the water sport board or vessel (FIG.
6). In this manner, the user may place the holding mount 2 at
locations which best accommodate the user's preference for use. Of
course, other arrangements (locations of the insert device holding
mount 2) on water sports boards are also within the scope of the
invention. Further embodiments may employ other suitable adhesives,
glue, rivets, screws or other means for securing the insert device
holding mount to the water sports board (FIG. 6).
[0016] FIG. 4 is a top angle view of the single piece insert device
11 according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
The insert device 11 has vertical exterior sides 12 and is slightly
thinner than the depth of the holder cavity 4 of the holding mount
2. The top surface 15 of the insert device 11 will be parallel to
the top surface 3 of the insert device holding mount 2.
[0017] FIG. 5 The insert device holder cavity 4 interior side
surfaces 5 will press against the insert device 11 exterior side
surfaces 12 to form a press fit hold. The insert device holding
mount 2 is made of a polyethylene closed cell foam and the cavity 4
is slightly smaller in length and width than the insert device 11
length and width. Therefore the insert device holder cavity
interior walls 5 are compressed against the exterior side walls 12
of the insert device 11 when it is inserted into the device holder
cavity 4. The bottom surface 6 of the insert device holder cavity 4
is also shaped to match the insert device 11 bottom surface 14. The
match of the shape of the insert device 11 to a custom shaped
device holder cavity 4, with the insert device 11 being slightly
larger in width and length holds the cavity walls 5 against the
tensile strength of the insert clock 11 to aid friction for the
press fit. The matching, inverse shapes of the device holding
cavity 4 and the insert device 11 are what create the press fit.
This press fit does not allow space for movement of the insert
device 11, therefore, holding the insert device 11 securely in
place inside the insert device holding mount 2. The 90 degree
corners 13 and the vertical sides 12 of the clock insert device 11
help to keep the clock insert device 11 from twisting or spinning
inside the clock insert device holder cavity 4. The insert device
module 11 is preferably a water resistant time piece, but not
limited to, any custom designed rigid insert device or object with
sufficient durability and water resistance or compatibility to
withstand prolonged exposure to sea water. Suitable insert devices
11 include, but are not limited to, time pieces, thermometers,
compasses, storage boxes. Alternatively, other suitable insert
items 11 suitable to be conveniently mounted on the surface of the
water sport board or vessel (FIG. 6) by a user can also be
utilized.
[0018] FIG. 6 An example of the invention 1 placed on the surface
of a water sport board.
[0019] For further custom design of the invention, the concept of a
holder cavity 4 with the insert press fit design in a closed cell
polyethylene foam will be the same, but the size and shape of the
insert device 11 may change and the insert device holder cavity 4
may be custom designed to fit another insert device 11. The same
press fit concept will be used and the same materials of
polyethylene closed cell foam or similar material will also be
used.
[0020] In other preferred embodiments, the exterior edges 7 of the
insert device holding mount will be offered in a variety of shapes
including but not limited to; original shape, rectangle, starfish,
turtle, sand dollar, sun, dolphin, and any other preferred shapes.
In other preferred embodiments, the insert device holding mount 2
is a contiguous structure comprising multiple insert device holder
cavity members 4 of suitable shape and contour to hold multiple
insert devices 11 in a single holder mount 2. Yet other embodiments
employ any suitable number and shaped holder cavity members 4.
[0021] Although the foregoing described the invention with
preferred embodiments, this is not intended to limit the invention.
Rather, the foregoing is intended to cover all modifications and
alternative constructions falling within the spirit and scope of
the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
