Sandwich speaker cabinet

Abstract

A sandwich speaker cabinet, which has an outer cabinet, an inner cabinet mounted inside the outer cabinet, and a flexible shock-absorbing filler layer sandwiched in between the outer cabinet and the inner cabinet to join the outer cabinet and the inner cabinet and to absorb shocks during operation of the speaker system so as to reduce distortion and vibrating noise created by the resonance of the speaker system. The ultimate purpose of this sandwich speaker cabinet is to reduce the distortion and vibrating noise created by the resonance of the cabinet when the speaker drivers are doing piston motion.

Claims



1. A sandwich speaker cabinet comprising: an outer cabinet, said outer cabinet being made of a hard material and having an opening at a front side thereof; an inner cabinet received inside said outer cabinet, said inner cabinet being made of a hard material and having an opening at a front side thereof corresponding to the opening of said outer cabinet; and a flexible intermediate shock-absorbing filler layer filled in said outer cabinet around said inner cabinet to join said outer cabinet and said inner cabinet and to absorb shocks, thereby reducing the distortion and vibrating noise created by the resonance of the cabinet when the speaker drivers are doing piston motion.

2. The sandwich speaker cabinet as claimed in claim 1, wherein said inner cabinet has reinforcing ribs provided at an inside wall thereof to reinforce the structural strength of said inner cabinet.

3. The sandwich speaker cabinet as claimed in claim 1, wherein said outer cabinet and said inner cabinet are made of one of the materials including hard plastics, wood and metal.

4. The sandwich speaker cabinet as claimed in claim 1, wherein said flexible intermediate shock-absorbing filler layer is made out of one of the materials including rubber, silicon rubber, polyvinyl chloride foam and polyurethane form.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0001] 1. Field of the Invention

[0002] The present invention relates speaker cabinets and more particularly, to a sandwich speaker cabinet, which effectively absorbs shocks during operation of the speaker system, thereby reducing the distortion and vibrating noise created by the resonance of the cabinet when the speaker drivers are doing piston motion.

[0003] 2. Description of the Related Art

[0004] Following the improvement of people's living standard, stereo system has become one of the requisite electric appliances in every family. Music may be used as a human activity for artistic or aesthetic, entertainment, or ceremonial purposes. Innovative music related products have been continuously created following the progress of the time. For example, Taiwan Utility Model No. 568485, entitled "Combination speaker cabinet having fixed buffer means" is one of the typical exemplars.

[0005] Early speaker cabinets are commonly made of wood. A wooden speaker cabinet is heavy and easy to be moistened. The angled contours of conventional wooden speaker cabinets are monotonous and do not show a streamline sense of beauty. Currently, polymer compounds are intensively used for molding speaker cabinets for the advantages of light and waterproof characteristics. Further, polymer compound materials can be molded into any of a variety of shapes. However, due to the limitation of wall thickness, size and shape, it is difficult to accurately control the quality when molding a speaker cabinet with polymer compounds. Uneven wall thickness or local deformation of the cabinet wall may result in a defective product, affecting the sense of beauty and structural strength.

[0006] FIG. 1 shows a prior art speaker cabinet designed to eliminate the aforesaid drawbacks. This design of speaker cabinet has the speaker wall formed of two layers, i.e., the speaker cabinet is formed of an outer cabinet wall and an inner cabinet wall adhered to the inner surface of the outer cabinet wall. According to this design, the outer diameter of the inner cabinet wall must fit the inner diameter of the outer cabinet wall so that both the outer cabinet wall and the inner cabinet wall can be tightly secured together. This design of speaker cabinet is not strong. When the outer cabinet wall and the inner cabinet wall are fastened together, gaps may be left in between the inner surface of the outer cabinet wall and the outer surface of the inner cabinet wall. During voice output of the speaker system, a resonant noise will be produced, affecting the output quality of the speaker system.

[0007] Therefore, it is desirable to provide a speaker cabinet that eliminates the aforesaid drawbacks.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0008] The present invention has been accomplished under the circumstances in view. It is the main object of the present invention to provide a sandwich speaker cabinet, which has a high structural strength. It is another object of the present invention to provide a sandwich speaker cabinet, which effectively absorbs shocks during operation of the speaker system, thereby reducing the distortion and vibrating noise created by the resonance of the cabinet when the speaker drivers are doing piston motion.

[0009] To achieve these and other objects of the present invention, the sandwich speaker cabinet comprises an outer cabinet, an inner cabinet, and a flexible intermediate shock-absorbing filler layer. The outer cabinet is made of a hard material, having an opening at the front side. The inner cabinet is made of a hard material and received inside the outer cabinet, having an opening at the front side corresponding to the opening of the outer cabinet. The flexible intermediate shock-absorbing filler layer is filled in the outer cabinet around the inner cabinet to join the outer cabinet and the inner cabinet. During operation of the speaker system, the flexible intermediate shock-absorbing filler layer absorbs shocks, thereby reducing the distortion and vibrating noise created by the resonance of the cabinet when the speaker drivers are doing piston motion.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0016] Referring to FIGS. 2.about.6, a sandwich speaker cabinet in accordance with the present invention is shown comprised of outer cabinet 1, an inner cabinet 2, and an intermediate shock-absorbing filler layer 3.

[0017] The outer cabinet 1 is a cabinet of hard material, having an opening 11 at one side.

[0018] The inner cabinet 2 is a hard material cabinet of relatively smaller size receivable in the outer cabinet 1, having an opening 21 at one side corresponding to the opening 11 of the outer cabinet 1.

[0019] The intermediate shock-absorbing filler layer 3 is a flexible bonding material sandwiched in between the inside wall of the outer cabinet 1 and the outside wall of the inner cabinet 2 to seal the gap and to join the outer cabinet 1 and the inner cabinet 2. The intermediate shock-absorbing filler layer 3 absorbs shocks during operation of the speaker system, thereby reducing the distortion and vibrating noise created by the resonance of the cabinet when the speaker drivers are doing piston motion.

[0020] During fabrication of the speaker cabinet, the relatively smaller inner cabinet 2 is inserted through the opening 11 into the inside of the relatively greater outer cabinet 1 and kept spaced from the inside wall of the outer cabinet 1, and then the flexible filler material of the intermediate shock-absorbing filler layer 3 is filled in the gap between the inside wall of the outer cabinet 1 and the outside wall of the inner cabinet 2 to join the outer cabinet 1 and the inner cabinet 2. The arrangement of the outer cabinet 1, the inner cabinet 2 and the intermediate shock-absorbing filler layer 3 greatly increases the wall thickness of the speaker cabinet and enhances the structural strength of the speaker cabinet, and effectively absorbs shocks during operation of the speaker system, thereby reducing the distortion and vibrating noise created by the resonance of the cabinet when the speaker drivers are doing piston motion.

[0021] Referring to FIG. 6, reinforcing ribs 22 may be provided at the inside wall of the inner cabinet 2 to reinforce the structural strength of the inner cabinet 2.

[0022] Further, the outer cabinet 1 and the inner cabinet 2 can be molded from hard plastics, or made out of wood, metal, or any of a variety of suitable hard materials. The intermediate shock-absorbing filler layer 3 can be formed of rubber, silicon rubber, PVC (Polyvinyl chloride), PU (Polyurethane), etc.

[0023] A prototype of sandwich speaker cabinet has been constructed with the features of FIGS. 2.about.6. The sandwich speaker cabinet functions smoothly to provide all of the features discussed earlier.

[0024] Although particular embodiments of the invention have been described in detail for purposes of illustration, various modifications and enhancements may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Accordingly, the invention is not to be limited except as by the appended claims.
