Claims
What is claimed is:
1. A new and distinct cultivar of Tecoma plant named `Balbahset`,
substantially as herein illustrated and described.
Description
Latin name of genus and species of plant claimed: Tecoma stans.
Variety denomination: `Balbahset`.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of
Tecoma plant botanically known as Tecoma stans and hereinafter
referred to by the cultivar name `Balbahset`.
The new cultivar originated in a controlled breeding program in
Arroyo Grande, Calif. during March 2015. The objective of the
breeding program was the development of Tecoma cultivars having
early continuous flowering and upright, well-branched habits.
The new Tecoma cultivar is the result of self-pollination of the
proprietary Tecoma stans breeding selection coded 19555, not
patented, characterized by its medium orange-colored flowers, dark
green-colored foliage, and moderately vigorous, upright growth
habit. The new cultivar was selected as a single flowering plant
within the progeny of the above stated self-pollination during
September 2016 in a controlled environment in Arroyo Grande,
Calif.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal stem cuttings
since September 2016 in Arroyo Grande, Calif. has demonstrated that
the new cultivar reproduces true to type with all of the
characteristics, as herein described, firmly fixed and retained
through successive generations of such asexual propagation.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The following characteristics of the new cultivar have been
repeatedly observed and can be used to distinguish `Balbahset` as a
new and distinct cultivar of Tecoma plant: 1. Dark greyed-orange
colored flowers; 2. Dark green-colored foliage; and 3. Moderately
vigorous, upright growth habit.
Plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of the parent
primarily in having darker orange-colored flowers, more branches
per plant, and more inflorescences per plant.
Of the many commercially available Tecoma cultivars, the most
similar in comparison to the new cultivar is Bahama Yellow Orange
`Balbahelor`, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 30,633. However, in comparison,
plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of `Balbahelor` in at
least the following characteristic: 1. Plants of the new cultivar
have greyed-orange colored petal lobes unlike the yellow-colored
petal lobes of plants of `Balbahelor`; 2. Plants of the new
cultivar have a darker greyed-orange colored corolla tube than
plants of `Balbahelor`; and 3. Plants of the new cultivar have a
smaller corolla, as measured by depth and diameter, than plants of
`Balbahelor`.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
The accompanying photographs show, as nearly true as it is
reasonably possible to make the same in color illustrations of this
type, typical flower and foliage characteristics of the new
cultivar. Colors in the photographs differ slightly from the color
values cited in the detailed description, which accurately
describes the colors of `Balbahset`. The plants were approximately
27 weeks old and were grown for approximately 15 weeks in an
outdoor nursery in Buellton, Calif.
FIG. 1 illustrates a side view of the overall growth and flowering
habit of `Balbahset`.
FIG. 2 illustrates a close-up view of an individual flower of
`Balbahset`.
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
The new cultivar has not been observed under all possible
environmental conditions to date. Accordingly, it is possible that
the phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in the environment,
such as temperature, light intensity, and day length, without,
however, any variance in genotype.
The chart used in the identification of colors described herein is
The R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London,
England, 2015 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary
significance are used. The color values were determined in
September 2019 under natural light conditions in West Chicago,
Ill.
The following descriptions and measurements describe approximately
27-week-old plants produced from cuttings taken from stock plants.
Cuttings were direct stuck in 2-inch pots and given one pinch four
weeks after sticking. Plants and were grown for 12 weeks before
transplant into an outdoor nursery in Buellton, Calif. Plants were
then grown for approximately 15 weeks. Measurements and numerical
values represent averages of typical plants. Botanical
