Disposable combination file and handle
Abstract
A disposable combination file and handle is formed of sheet
metal having a plurality of sharpened file teeth struck outwardly
therefrom with the sheet metal bent to form oppositely disposed
sides at least one of which carries file teeth thereon. A handle is
integrally secured to the file by welding or the like with the
handle consisting of a strip of sheet metal having folded in
opposite sides adapted for connection to the file. In a modified
form of the invention integral pads are formed on the file and the
handle engages over the pads and is rigidly secured thereto.

Description
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to disposable combination files and
handles in which the file is formed of sheet metal having file
teeth struck therefrom and with opposite upstanding sides
integrally secured to the sheet with at least one of the sides
carrying file teeth thereon. A handle is rigidly secured to the
file in an arched form and consists of a strip of sheet metal with
its opposite side edges reverted for strength.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a combined file
and handle which is disposable.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following
specification when considered in the light of the attached
drawings.
FIG. 1 is a side elevation of the invention shown partially broken
away and in section for convenience of illustration;
FIG. 2 is a top plan view of the handle with the file being shown
in broken lines;
FIG. 3 is a bottom plan view of the handle with the file shown in
broken lines;
FIG. 4 is an end elevation of the invention;
FIG. 5 is a top plan view of the handle blank;
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary end view of the handle structure shown
partially broken away for convenience of illustration;
FIG. 7 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of a modified
form of the invention;
FIG. 8 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the file blank used in
the structure of FIG. 7;
FIG. 9 is a plan view of a modified form of blank for a file;
FIG. 10 is a side elevation of the file made from the blank of FIG.
9 with parts broken away and in section for convenience of
illustration;
FIG. 11 is an end elevation of the structure illustrated in FIG.
10; and
FIG. 12 is a top plan view of the structure illustrated in FIG.
10.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference
characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures the
reference numeral 20 indicates generally a disposable combined file
and handle constructed in accordance with the invention.
The file 20 includes a generally rectangular sheet metal plate 21
having a pair of upstanding side walls 22, 23 integrally formed
along the opposite side edges thereof. File teeth 24 are struck
from the middle of the generally rectangular sheet 21 and from one
of the side walls 23 to project downwardly and outwardly therefrom
respectively as can be clearly seen in FIGS. 1 and 4. The file
teeth 24 are sharpened and permit the rapid cutting of wood,
plastic, and other soft materials as required.
A handle 25 is formed from an elongate strip of sheet metal 26
having its opposite side edges rolled inwardly at 27, 28 for
strength. The handle 25 has inwardly extending end members 29, 30
which are spot welded at 31, 32 respectively to the body of the
file 20.
The sides 22, 23 assist in rigidifying the generally rectangular
plate 21 and the handle 25 may be used to manipulate the file 20 as
required. As the teeth 24 become dull the file 20 is discarded
since its structure is quite inexpensive and the file and handle as
a unit are disposable.
In FIGS. 7 and 8 a modified form of the invention is illustrated
wherein a file 20' includes a generally rectangular sheet 21'
having opposite side walls one of which is shown at 23'. The
generally rectangular plate 21 has a plurality of struck out
sharpened teeth 24' as does the side wall 23'. A handle tab 29' is
integrally formed on each end of the generally rectangular plate
21' and is bent along the line 30' to extend perpendicularly
upwardly from the plate 21'. A handle 25' having inwardly rolled
edges 27' is inserted over the handle tabs 29' and is crimped
thereto to thus lock the handle 25' to the generally rectangular
plate 21'. The modified form of the file illustrated in FIGS. 7 and
8 is used in the identical manner to the file illustrated in the
preferred form of the invention and may be similarly discarded when
the sharpened teeth become dull. In FIGS. 9 through 12 a further
modified disposable combination file and handle is illustrated
generally at 40. The combined file and handle 40 includes a
generally rectangular plate 41 having the opposite side edge
portions thereof 42, 43 bent upwardly to lie at right angles to the
generally rectangular plate 41. The plate 41 and the edge 43 have
sharpened file teeth 44 struck therefrom as can be seen in FIGS.
10, 11 and 12.
An elongate handle forming tail piece 45 is integrally formed with
one end of the plate 41 and extends outwardly therefrom. Side edges
46, 47 on the tail piece 45 are rolled inwardly to stiffen the tail
piece 45 in forming it into a handle. A tab 48 on the outer end of
the tail piece 45 is bent to engage the opposite end of the
generally rectangular plate 41 and is spot welded thereto. The tail
piece 45 is bent along the line 49 to overlie the plate 41. The
disposable combined file and handle is used in the identical manner
as the disposable file and handle 20 and is discarded when the
sharpened teeth 44 become dull.
Having thus described the preferred embodiments of the invention it
should be understood that numerous structural modifications and
adaptations may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of
the claims.
