MAKEUP DEVICE

Abstract

A transfer for providing an eye shadow on an eyelid comprising a paper sheet having an shadow print of water resistant pigmented make up composition paint carried thereon in the desired design configuration, a water washable adhesive on said shadow print and said sheet, and a protective cover fitting over said makeup composition and adhesive, a method of providing the eye shadow which comprises the steps of preparing the eyelid for receipt of makeup, pressing the above defined transfer against the eyelid in desired orientation, adding water to wet the paper and separate the paper from the transfer, removing the paper while leaving the paint on the eyelid, washing off the excess adhesive and covering the paint with a thin layer of powder prior to closing the eyelid.

Claims



I claim:

1. A makeup device for providing a shadow print of colored material on an eyelid, comprising:

a water permeable sheet material sized to carry the shadow print,

a shadow print carried on said sheet and formed from a water resistant pigmented material shaped to fit the eyelid and cover selected portions thereof,

a water washable adhesive on said shadow print and the underside of said sheet, and

a protective cover fitting over said shadow print and adhesive said protective cover being removably secured to said adhesive on said sheet.

2. A makeup device as defined in claim 1, in which the shadow print is a mosaic of printed areas having open spaces disposed within the overall shadow print area.

3. A makeup device as defined in claim 1, in which the shadow print consists essentially of a water resistant paint.
Description



BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to improvements in a MAKEUP DEVICE AND METHOD OF APPLYING SAME.

It is well-known to provide makeup on eyelids in the form of eye shadow and the like, and various different shades of different colors and intensities are desired in order to provide makeup which is compatible with the coloring of the user and other factors including the particular clothing being worn at a given time. Typically, eye shadow is applied in the form of ordinary makeup which is spread around over the eyelid and shaded as desired by the user. With this technique, it is quite difficult to obtain the desired distribution effects and coloring. Thus it requires great skill to achieve a sufficient coloring for the eye shadow without the coloring being too severe and destroying the overall desired effect. In addition, even those who have considerable skill in applying makeup find proper application to be a tedious and time-consuming task.

These prior techniques also limit severely the nature of the application so that certain desired effects are difficult if not impossible to attain.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

In accordance with the present invention, the desired amount and distribution of eye makeup is provided by utilizing preformed shadow prints in a transfer device, and transferring these shadow prints to the eyelid when desired. In this way, various colors and color effects may be uniformly achieved without any difficulty, and in accordance with the present invention the transfer device will provide shadow prints that are somewhat durable, and resistent to smudging or smearing.

A typical transfer device constructed according to the invention comprises a water permeable sheet material such as paper sized to carry the shadow print, a pigmented composition serving as the shadow print and carried on said sheet and shaped in the configuration of an eyelid, a water washable adhesive on said shadow print and said sheet, and a protective cover fitting over the makeup composition and adhesive.

Preferably, the shadow print is a water resistant print removable by oils, creams or makeup remover, with the paint carrying the pigment so as to be substantially unaffected by water. The print is distributed to form a mosaic of areas of printed material and nonprinted material so that the desired color may be applied without having "too much" color present. This distribution may be in the form of dots or lines or any suitable design such that areas of open space are distributed together with the areas of printing or paint material, the ratio between the printed areas and the open areas being of the order of say between one to ten and ten to one.

In general, any oil base makeup or cured resinous paint composition suitable for application to the human body may be used, the important criteria being the ability of the composition to remain in place during light rinsing or washing so that the water washable adhesive may be removed.

In its method form, the user simply cleans the eyelid by ordinary washing, or where a prior eye shadow has been provided according to this invention, removal of the prior eye shadow and cleaning. With the eyelid thus prepared, a transfer device as described above is applied in the following steps. First the protective cover is removed, then the user presses the transfer against the eyelid in the desired orientation, adds water to the back of the water permeable sheet while pressing the transfer device against the eyelid. After the sheet is thoroughly wetted, the user removes the permeable sheet from the eyelids while leaving the design of makeup on the eyelid, and covers the design with a thin layer of powder.

The user may then open his or her eye without having the eyelids stick, and the transfer device is generally usable for two or three days without change, if desired. During application, it is important to keep the eyes closed in order to prevent the adhesive from causing portions of the skin to adhere to each other as the skin folds over on opening the eye. It is also sometimes necessary to cut the design down somewhat to fit the particular user's eye.

In addition, the preferred method calls for the removal of the glue by washing same with a light application of soap after the transfer has been applied to the eyelid and prior to covering the design with powder. This provides a cleaner more attractive application.

From the above explanation, it is seen that it is a primary object of the invention to provide an improved transfer device and method of application of same in which an improved eye shadow is provided to the user.

Another object of the invention is to provide a transfer device and application of same of the character described in which excellent results are obtained by relatively unskilled users.

A further object of the invention is to provide a transfer device of the character described which is inexpensive to make and which provides accurately reproducible results.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as the specification progresses, and the new and useful features of the makeup device and method of applying same will be more fully defined in the claims attached hereto.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING

The preferred form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this description, in which:

FIG. 1, is a front view showing the eyes of a user made up in accordance with the invention;

FIG. 2, a plan view of a typical makeup device of the invention in partially disassembled condition; and

FIG. 3, a cross-sectional view of the makeup device of FIG. 2 illustrating the device during application, and showing its condition at the beginning and end of application as well as intermediate periods.

While only the preferred form of the invention is shown, it should be understood that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the claims hereto attached without departing from the spirit of the invention.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

Referring now to FIG. 2, there is shown a makeup device 11 for providing a shadow print 12 on each of the eyelids 13 of a user 14 as shown in FIG. 1. As best seen in FIG. 2 and 3a, the preferred device 11 comprises a paper sheet 16 having a layer of water washable adhesive 17 on one side and a cover 18 carried over the adhesive. The cover 18 is preferably oiled tissue paper, but it will be appreciated that any suitable protective cover such as plastic sheeting can be used.

The main paper sheet 16 is sized to carry the shadow print 12, and preferably two prints, one for each eye, are carried on a single sheet. In addition, the paper is thick enough to protect the adhesive from atmospheric moisture, and the cover 18 is sufficiently waterproof to complete this protection.

Carried within the adhesive layer 17 is the shadow print 12 formed in a desired overall configuration and mosaic. The overall configuration may be sized for different sized eyelids, if desired, and configurations which are too large in certain areas may be trimmed before application. The mosaic provides open areas within the overall area of makeup to provide a design and/or soften the color effect. If desired, the shadow print may contain more than one color, although a single color gives excellent results.

The makeup should be water resistant and have sufficient body that it will hold its shape during application. Paint composition made from suitable oil base vehicles and carrying the desired color and intensity of pigment are quite satisfactory. The paint will provide a flexible coating which is cured prior to application and held onto the skin by the adhesive.

The device is easily fabricated by applying a layer of adhesive to a sheet of paper, printing the paint over the adhesive to provide a plurality of eye shadow forms on the sheet, applying another layer of adhesive over the first layer and shadow prints, and placing the cover sheet over the adhesive. The assembly is then cut into units similar to that shown in FIG. 2.

In order to apply the device, the user simply prepares the eyelid by washing or the like, removes the cover 18 by peeling it away as shown in FIG. 3a, and presses the device against the eyelid in the desired orientation. The placement should be as close to the eyelashes as possible, and pressed from the center outward. If the design seems too large anywhere, it can be removed, trimmed and replaced.

The layer of adhesive over the paint will pick up enough moisture from the air and skin to hold the shadow print on the eyelid, however the paper backing must be removed. This is done by wetting the paper so that water penetrates through and loosens the adhesive holding the paper to the shadow print and eyelid. The wet paper is then peeled back as shown in FIG. 3b.

The shadow print and adhesive are now present on the eyelid as shown in FIG. 3c, and the user next washes off the excess adhesive 17 with soap and water to provide the configuration shown in FIG. 3d. It is important that the user holds the eyelid down until the excess adhesive is removed to prevent sticking of folds of skin in the eyelid as the eye blinks open. Preferably, a layer of powder such as talc or baby powder is applied after washing off the adhesive to dry the area and provide an attractive appearance. Additional makeup can then be applied, if desired.

Shadow prints applied in this manner will generally last up to three days, even when other makeup is applied thereover, and the eyelid is washed a number of times. When it is desired to freshen the makeup, or to change it, the eye shadow is first removed by rubbing it with a mild eye makeup remover of an oily type or with cold cream. After soaking for a time sufficient to take up and absorb the eye shadow sufficiently to break the adherence to the skin (usually about 2 to 5 minutes), the material is wiped off with a soft tissue. The eyelid is then washed and a new shadow print applied according to the procedure given above.

From the above description it is seen that I have provided a novel eye makeup device and developed a novel procedure for applying eye shadow to the eyelid. It is also seen that my procedure and device enables a relatively unskilled person to apply eye shadow in a reliably predictable fashion.
